dan hufferd Posted March 31, 2018 Posted March 31, 2018 I have a couple lowrance graphs the cheaper ones. My question is this...are there units out there that can separate a fish from the bottom when they are laying on the bottom ? Is there an adjustment that will give me better target separation, I do not have chirp. Thanks in advance
zarraspook Posted March 31, 2018 Posted March 31, 2018 I too have older lowrance units w/o chirp.. on my main unit I can change the top/bottom settings to magnify a 10 foot area.. But if you are not anchored "six ways from Sunday" ; the area will be constant changing.. I seen a side/down scan unit demo, in the state park marina area, and you could see all the junk left on the bottom from rebuilding the docks.. Plus, the guy running the unit pointed to spot and said it was a cat fish laying on the bottom... Even with my bi-focals-- these 70+ eyes couldn't see it.. Sorry for the ramble but, Graphs are like tvs/computers/phones/etc.. Every six months they come out with a better one.. wtr dogs and terryj1024 2 "Look up OPTIMIST in the dictionary - there is a picture of a fishing boat being launched"

So many days fish are catatonic and just laying on the bottom ( I think ) it sure would be nice to see them and maybe if I can fish near one I could at least foul hook something. I am too tight to spend the $ for a nice one. who knows if it would really help ? Daryk Campbell Sr 1

That said, I think good electronics make a big difference; as Zara says with SI, DI, and 2D views of one spot you can pretty much ID a fish return - learning to read what species of fish you are seeing and their mood is next. Certain returns on the 998c get me really excited...kind of like one of Pavlov’s dogs.... Mike
Members Bigfishscott Posted March 31, 2018 Members Posted March 31, 2018 What units do you have and how do you set them up. There are lots of little tweaks you can do to try to see those fish. Si/Di/2-D all are different. I know a guy that has about the most inexpensive units you can use and and he still catches a plenty.

Hds 8 gen 2 with sonar only in the front and a lowrance elite 7 on the dash. when I can I hope to buy the lss 2 a side scan transducer for the hds unit then move it to the dash. Here is a picture from a crappie fishing trip in July. Pic of the 7
Dutch Posted March 31, 2018 Posted March 31, 2018 Bruce Samson also known as Dr Sonar can tell even without the most modern technology. He has looked at several of my screen shots and picked up fish that I had overlooked. He does some incredible sonar education for Lowrance. He is a medical Dr. who at the age of 50 decided to become a professional walleye fisherman. He has done quite well. That being said Lowrance has just released a new update to Hds Gen 3 and Carbon units called fish reveal. I have done the upgrade on my units but haven't spent the time to get comfortable with all of the features. It is used on down scan and adds 14 fish reveal color pallets to go along with the standard 9 down scan pallets. I have gotten some good looking stuff on my console unit but my bow unit has the 2d ducer out and I haven't been able to duplicate the console unit.
Members Bigfishscott Posted March 31, 2018 Members Posted March 31, 2018 Looks like you have it adjusted in that picture really well. 2-D is the hardest to get that return that you want from the bottom. For separation down imagine is your best bet. The only problem with di and si is that to give you a good image is you have to be moving. I use mainly 2-d all the time. Just about the only time I use the other is just scanning for bait or if I’m not seeing bait anywhere, so I switch to di assuming the bait and the fish are on the bottom. I’m a really simple fisherman I don’t take 100 rods and thousands of baits with me. Right now if I’m fishing a tournament or prefishing for one I can fit everything I need in a 8x8 tackle warehouse cardboard box. dan hufferd 1

There are still not many picture of fish on the bottom. when I fish for walleye I fish habitat and seldom ever see them on sonar. Every once in a while I will see what looks to be a fish/ stick/rock ?? Never sure. Suspended are easy to see, the guy in this cool video is fishing a food source but cannot see his target until it comes up. My son has the same unit with chirp, I will have to see if it makes a difference.
