yaknar Posted May 8, 2018 Posted May 8, 2018 I floated down the river for the first time this year. I thought I would clean up the kayak before I took her out. She"s about 10 years old and the yellow is fading so I bought a bottle of 303 Protectant , it did a great job. I dont know what the life expectancy for a kayak is but she looks like she could last for another 10 years. Great weather but the river was up a little, for me. The good news was on the way out of the house I checked my list and almost forgot my camera. The bad news was the last time I charged it up was last year, so I was only able to take 3 pictures. The google-eye were out and hungry so I caught a mess of them. Caught a few smallmouth, only one nice one and I didnt see any nest. After I took its picture my camera stopped working so the rest of my story I have no pictures. The longest fish I caught was about 3 ft., It was a Gar. I fought it for a few minutes, surprised it didnt throw the lure, which was a deep diving crank. I was on the bank at the time so I decided to walk it up on the bank. The lure was just barely hanging in its mouth so I dropped my rod and jumped over and straddled it on my knees, hoping to land it. But it just threw the lure and slipped through my knees. The camera was dead so I couldnt take a picture anyway. Released them all.....great day on the river...looking forward to a great year on the river.... timinmo Posted May 8, 2018 Posted May 8, 2018 That fish is built like me, big around the middle. But beautiful. Flysmallie 1
jdmidwest Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 Where did you fine 303 at? It is the wonder juice for plastic protection and flylines. Have not seen it for years. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Al Agnew Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 Seems like you almost have to order 303 from somewhere...nobody around here carries it. There have been some arguments on various paddling websites about how good 303 really is. Some have said it sheds oil into the water for quite a while after application. Others say it's terrific. Personally, I've used it and several other UV protectants on my Royalex canoes, including good ol' Armor All, and they all seem to work just fine. I especially love how easily it is to slide the canoe over logs and gravel bars when I put that stuff on it. I do it every spring, and again sometime in mid-summer.
jdmidwest Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 Armorall is too greasy. 303 is pure silicone I think and does dry well. Back in 90's I bought little foil pack foam wipes for fly lines that were 303. Guess I will have to Google it. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Fishmeister Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 Got my last bottle at Camping World. Use it on the rubber surrounds on my travel trailer windows. Have purchased it from Amazon in the past also. Good stuff!!
Pat Magee Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 They sell it at Alpine Shop if you live near one. @MOsmallies told me about it and I use it on everything plastic. It also has brought several of my daughters outdoor toys back to like new condition after they sat outside all summer. It also is THE BEST at restoring those faded plastic panels on cars! yaknar Posted May 9, 2018 Author Posted May 9, 2018 In Springfield, you can get it at the O'Reilly on south Campbell. When I went in to buy it I couldnt find on the shelf. I talk to the guy behind the counter and he said " we keep it in the back". I didnt ask why but it did made me smile.
