Just introducing myself. I live about 50 miles west of Stockton, just west of Lamar, lived here all my life. Love the outdoors hunting, fishing, camping etc. My daughter who is now 6 has been wanting to go camping so we are planning a trip to Stockton state park next weekend. I have grown up fishing ponds and strip pits but don't know a thing about lake fishing so any advice would be appreciated. We don't have a boat so obviously  we will be fishing from the bank. I don't care what kind of fish we catch just anything to keep a 6 year old interested. She loves the outdoors so hopefully the camping trip will be a success and we can make a family tradition out of it. Thanks.

If I fished only to capture fish, my fishing trips would have ended long ago.

Welcome, never been to that park, but theres also a Stockton lake forum section so hopefully if you post in there someone will chime in with some good advice.

Be ready for many snags, and much retying.  Bring your own pole, but expect not to fish ;-). I have an 8 year old daughter and 11 year old son. We go a few times a year and have since very young. I would recommend a bobber with a piece of nightcrawler.  Or a Ned rig.  (Dont bring alot of tackle) both can be casted fairly easy, and they produce.   Expect her to lose interest fairly quickly,  and bring snacks, and drinks.  Show her the plants and tell her stories, you both will have a great time.

Thanks for the info I'll look into that.

Thanks for the reply and advice. I had never heard of a Ned rig I had to look that up. I understand the short attention span. We have a pond I take her fishing at now and then and she usually winds up trying to catch frogs or grasshoppers.😉

Lots of info on the Ned Rig on here.  Lots. It' very simple, yet effective.

Welcome to the forum. On the east parking lot of Ruark Bluff public use area near the swim beach there used to be a public fishing dock. It isn't marked real well and there is a short path through the brush. It was an old barge of some sort. Using minnows or worms under a float could always catch fish there. About 10 min drive from state park.

Find a bridge with some rip rap.  Float a big shiner under a large bobber, channel cats are active and hungry.  Bluegill shod be ramping up too, piece of a nifhtcrawler and a slip bobber set 3 to 4 feet deep.  If you find a spawning area it will be fast and furious.
