MoCarp Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 This is the kind of thing both Missouri and Arkansas should get kudos for not many places you can catch world record class walleyes and they live in our back yard! https://mdc.mo.gov/conmag/2018-08/missouri’s-weird-walleye MONKEYS? what monkeys?
Smalliebigs Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 It’s a shame the MDC doesn’t stock them in the Black River or Meramec
tjm Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 Quote Current, Black, Eleven Point, and St. Francis rivers I don't know why they don't stock the Meramec, but Black is in the list of four rivers stocked. Does the Meramec have native or naturalized Walleye?
Gavin Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 Think the Meramec Walleye are native. They have stocked the Black below Clearwater. St Francis too but have never caught one on the St. Think they all swim to Arkansas. tjm 1
Al Agnew Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 I know the Black River strain is a different fish genetically, but I suspect the original walleye in many other Ozark streams were similar in growth potential. Really big walleye were caught in the streams above Stockton, Greer’s Ferry, and the upper end of Bull Shoals in the years after the dams were built, but the runs shrank and the fish got smaller as northern strain walleye polluted the genetics. I’m glad MDC is publicizing the potential of the Black River strain, but I wish they would manage the existing populations to better reach that potential. Nearly every local in the area keeps every walleye they legally can. Somehow you have to give the small number that are approaching those huge sizes more protection to get there. This state could produce some world record class fish. MoCarp 1
