dave potts Posted August 13, 2018 Posted August 13, 2018 I wasn't sure what kind of rod he was referring to. I agree the best way to fit any reel seat is to slide it down from the top to tighten onto the taper of the rod. However a loose fly rod reel seat can be fixed like I described above. Flyrod reel seats are generally oversized so the blank area where it ends up at is shimmed with tape or cork. A casting or spinning rod couldn't be fixed this way.
tjm Posted August 14, 2018 Posted August 14, 2018 I don't know about the " PROPER way to fit a reel seat" , a very common way is to build the rod diameter up with an "arbor" often masking tape. I have seen this in books and on rods that I have stripped down as well as in Mud Hole's how to videos. A cheaper rod had cardboard strips as an arbor. I have never encountered a reel seat that could not be removed or installed from either the butt or the tip, because the arbor is always larger than either. Are the proper reel seats machined with an inside taper that matches each model of rod? Who sells?

No, close but they have to be fitted. An uplocking reel seat on a flyrod, for example, would push itself apart if not fitted to the blank taper. Skeletonized or exposed blank reel seats on casting rods absolutely have to be fitted to the blank taper. The only reason not to fit the arbors and reel seat would be because you're lazy or you goofed when building the rod.....so you just loaded it up with an ounce and a half of glue. Fine rods just aren't supposed to be built that way.
tjm Posted August 14, 2018 Posted August 14, 2018 If I understand you there would be no arbor/bushing?
Bushbeater Posted August 14, 2018 Posted August 14, 2018 tjm and wrench are both correct, many exposed blank reel seats are sized to fit the rod taper. Most standard reel seats use an arbor.
tjm Posted August 14, 2018 Posted August 14, 2018 I have lead a sheltered life, never seen an exposed blank reel seat that I know of. Point me to link of how that works, please?

It's best if there isn't, but if there is then the arbors are fitted to the blank taper and the seat fitted to the arbors...which should also be tapered so as to trap the seat between the arbor(s) and the foregrip, or whatever is above the reel seat. Doesn't matter what is below it because the arbor ain't going anywhere...or shouldn't.

Dang, everyone seems so testy and tender with emotion lately. WTF? 😅
tjm Posted August 14, 2018 Posted August 14, 2018 Not having seen something makes me testy? I am of a curious nature and will look into it. My familiarity with modern casting tackle is slim. My rod building books are at least 40 years old, I guess. I have found a couple of forum discussions on their use and some pictures of them, not much impressed by what I see so far; look like design interruptus. Different strokes and all that.
