If you really wanna know how efficient a jet pump can be.....run one in clean water without the grates.   

The biggest problem with smaller jets, like 25-50hp is the grates.   I've often wondered if chicken wire wouldn't be better on small outboards.

Have you run one without the grates?  How much better was it?  Some guys sharpen them but the guy at Troutt said they messed around with and found that rounded edges were better.

Yes it wakes it up big-time, throttle response is out of this world. Makes a 25 feel like a 25.   You gotta have the grates though.   Sharpening the edges would just cause more gravel to get wedged in tighter between them.   

Chicken wire would work fine....but you'd have to stop and replace it every time you bumped bottom.
