5bites Posted May 14, 2019 Posted May 14, 2019 On a spinning rod there’s nothing at all wrong with running a really long leader. 20-40’ even. Personally I probably average 15’ or so. On a casting rod I probably go at least 10’ but under 20’.
Members NebSchmidty Posted May 14, 2019 Members Posted May 14, 2019 Depending on how your preferred rod manufacturer rates their powers, I wouldn't shy away from considering something in the light category as well. It's been my experience that some medium or even M/L rods rated for up to 1/2 or 5/8oz can still be a bit much of a stick for a chewed up chunk of elaztec on a 1/16oz head, especially when dealing with wind or when trying to land a big fish on 6lb FC. IMO, something in that 1/16-3/8 or 1/4 oz weight and a 4-8 or 10 lb line rating seems to be about the ideal zone for working those 1/16 or 1/8 oz turd worms across rock and gravel structure. As for a specific model recommendation... I may be a fanboy (no jerseys), but I absolutely love my Dobyns DX701SF finesse. Paired with a 2500 size Daiwa and 6lb FC, it's a real hoot when hooked up to an angry smallmouth. magicwormman 1

It flows well and it’s really pretty simple to tie after a little practice. I always use the alberto knot. It hasn't caused me any problems and is easier and faster than the FG knot in my opinion (mainly because you have to keep good tension on both lines) . So @DavidB if you were like me and give up on the FG knot, you should look into the alberto knot. I'm sure there are better videos for demonstration out there, but I always refer back to this one that Jason Christie did on it if I mess something up or get confused on a step. magicwormman, snagged in outlet 3, Royal Blue and 1 other 4

It's just a matter of preference! Some guys will tie 10 to 20 ft leaders. I personally like a 6 to 8 ft/ leader/ This allows me to retie several times before I have to change my leader. I love braid and I throw power pro the most. I have some on my reels that is 5 years old and still performing fine. Royal Blue, nomolites and snagged in outlet 3 3
