Smart phones are pretty darn good but zero comparison to a real camera.

Explain.  They're so much better than film from 1970's.   Which was the deal then.  What's available now that is so mush bettter?

Try any of these with a cell phone:

Fast shutter speed freezes action in sports. That’s mom running down the sideline cheering her son 😄

Slow shutter speed and a tripod allows the water to flow for a bit creating the soft effect.

A long, sharp lens with a wide aperture. People are more comfortable if you’re farther away. Was probably 40 feet away with a 200 mm lens. Wide aperture blurs the background emphasizing the subject. And, it’s a sharper lens than any cell phone.

This rodeo was at night and shot using a high ISO. Shutter speed freezes action again. 200 mm from the stands.

And, with a long lens you can be kinda discreet 🤪

Yep Ness nailed it. Any kind of sports and your small camera sucks. Or low light. Or a subject more than 10 feet away, Or something for prints. But they have come a long ways. Like I said I’ve been doing a lot of video work with an iPhone and most of the time I get really good results. But I need more to get the quality I want.

For most people that camera is going to be perfect. But I ain’t most people.

I never thought about it, but I guess squirrels have got teets too!

Click on the pictures for an idea of the detail captured -- the little pictures in the post are reduced in size.

Very happy with the resolution and sharpness of this camera and lens.

Well I pushed the button on a new gear order today. Couldn’t make the jump to mirrorless. The money to replace glass at this point just isn’t available. I’m also not thrilled with the size.  Great it’s compact, but I have big meaty paws. I like a big meaty camera. I strongly considered a Z6 but again the glass issue plus I think Nikon will bring something new soon. So I stuck with the Nikon D7500 DSLR that I almost bought last summer. My current glass isn’t great but would be very expensive to replace everything. Or even just get the same coverage. I did throw down on a Tamron 24-70 2.8 VC G2. It was more expensive than the camera. Now I just gotta wait on it to arrive.

Good for you! I’m sure you’re going to be happy with your choice. Don’t know what you’re upgrading from but the newer cameras are really impressive. Really like the auto ISO on mine. High ISO is soo good I don’t really have to worry about it.

That’s what I’m looking for. I’m upgrading from a Nikon D90. Great camera in its time and still works great but I needed something with better ISO and decent video capabilities.

I haven’t had time for a lot of playing but this is an impressive piece of machinery. I heard a lot of reviews that the lens was slow to focus but I don’t see it. Barely touch the shutter button and you have a half dozen pics, all in focus, before you know what happened.

Time to stop reading online reviews on equipment you already  own. :D No good comes from that. And stay away from dpreview.com

Things have advanced sooo much in the last 10 years. I think the thing I like most is the high ISO performance and the auto ISO feature. I don't have to worry or fiddle much with ISO anymore.

I popped for a Fujifilm 55-200 f/3.5-4.8 (70-300 equivalent) with in-lens stabilization a while back. Glad I did -- nice lens, sharp, well built. Gonna use that a lot.

Very true. No matter the item you can always find the best and the worst. dpreview sux. Really the only photo people I can stand to listen to is Fro Knows Photos. But he's a little arrogant and thinks everyone should just buy the best of the best. At least he's entertaining.
