oneshot Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 I have several trees ready to cut up but my wife has enough Propane to do all next Winter and then some. We have a Gas Log that we’ve used before my wife is saying the heck with wood and just go with gas. Also have a Furnace and little Heater. Which would you do? Yes she is also thinking on my health but I’m thinking I can’t just set around. oneshot
Dutch Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 Find someone to cut it on the shares. That is what I do.
MOPanfisher Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 I love cutting wood, but haven't used anything bit propane and electric for years. Getting someone ro cut it on shares is a good idea too. Otherwise use that time to go fishing instead.
Terrierman Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 Wood and ashes are enough of a mess in the house that I gave up heating with wood long ago. Now I have ground source heat pump. It's the best there is if you ask me.

With one Arm it is harder cutting and splitting even with a Splitter. Then have to lift it with one hand Shoulder high putting it in the Box. Having someone cut on shares wouldn’t help on this. Our son kept us mostly in wood this last Winter other than what I cut. But I can but it takes longer. Do have to take into consideration it cost more for Insurance. oneshot
Quillback Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 Had a wood stove when I lived in Washington state, had gas heat so the wood stove was a supplement to the gas. I'd probably burn anywhere from 2-4 cords every year. Did that for close to 20 years. Cut, split, hauled, and stacked it all myself. I liked it, great exercise and love hearing that wood pop in the stove. I could just about blow myself out of my little house it would get so hot. I burned fir, hemlock, western cedar, and alder, not much hardwood out there. Nice thing about fir and hemlock is that it is very straight grained and splits pretty easily, didn't need a log splitter or a maul, split it all with an axe. Alder and western cedar when aged is almost as light as balsa, burns hot and fast, works real well for a fire starter. But I don't have a wood stove now, have one of those gas fireplaces. I am happy with that now. snagged in outlet 3 1
Dutch Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 We burned wood for years then moved to town. We didn’t plan to burn wood and did not include a fireplace or stove in the plans, but a few years ago when I called for propane I was told I had to agree to the price in advance. I said I could get by with 500 gallons. They said it would be $3000. I said forget it. I drug out a chainsaw drove to one of the farms and went to cutting wood again. I also bought a wood burning stove. Quillback 1
oneshot Posted May 12, 2020 Author Posted May 12, 2020 Well my wife locked in for 800 Gallons of Propane, it will take about 700 Gallons for the Winter Seems I’m headed for a life of leisure no cutting wood, no Garden and no Deer Hunting. oneshot
Quillback Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 Probably a good time to lock in on propane, assuming the price had dropped like gas has.
