No 8 made some fine sticks. I have a 7' Hellbent we use for tubes and big shakey heads.

If I'm throwing it on docks or trees, I use a 6'6"-7' rod. The 7'6" is for the massive gravel banks and points. Long casts, hooksets at the end of the same, and better control of the fish. Example...it makes it easier to guide a hot smallmouth from one side of the bow to the other, without hitting the TM.

It's not for everyone. Keep in mind, it's often the only thing we throw all day.

the old ,first generation ,Quantum Smoke 7'4" mxf HSC70 graphite

That first 16" of rod tip is made just right imo for detecting bites, working the Ned through cover,and soft enough to let the fish tell you they got it, without them knowing you are about to get them, the rest of the blank loads evenly and has enough left to lean on em if needed to turn them 😄

i know that i am the odd man out, but i use a m 7' pro qualifier with a bait caster.  i use a 10# test braid that is smaller than a 2 lb.  mono.  sure can feel them breathe on it.  sticks  really well, and have not had any issues with losing them.  of course when they are stuck through the top of the head, they are pretty hard to lose.

Interestingly, I tried a baitcaster, but not with braid. Another gentleman on here was using one, with 6# mono, I believe. I happen to have a baitcaster built on the same 7'6" blank as two of my favorite Ned spin rods. I normally use it for letting them load up a wake bait. Gave it a whirl several years ago.

About all I can say is I tip my cap to anyone who can make a non-twirly reel work for it.

Yes  sir, I've been out hunting smallmouth. But its only yielding baby largemouth & walleye. 

Ned bite 8-15ft deep along boulders, right at the base, hiding in the shade.

Short pitch & watch the death spiral down into the shade. That's the sauce right now (10 fish per hour)

The hop & glide is working, as well as the straight swim & the pendulum swing under the boat.

I can see them taking the bait with my 3rd eye. You instinctively know they have it when you pick up on the slack. 

Some of the time, they are gut hooked if you don't use the Jedi mind tricks on them.

Literal life saver. If you can get it on the hook, it works. Fantastic on split shot and tube fish.
