oneshot Posted May 22, 2020 Posted May 22, 2020 We’re building a Deck. Thinking on what wood to use. Oak would be strong but very hard once seasoned. Treated Pine will cost more but easier to work with. Also wondering if a Nailer will work ok on Oak? oneshot
fishinwrench Posted May 22, 2020 Posted May 22, 2020 Plain old 2x6's and 2x8's (untreated) and hit it with sealer once completely built. Use treated 4x4's for the supports. Nails suck. Use the green deck screws.

We built a Deck with nails and had to go back and hit the nails after the wood dried. Went to Lowe’s asked their Door man about Doors and he had no idea other than what they have in stock. oneshot
Terrierman Posted May 22, 2020 Posted May 22, 2020 If I was going to build a deck today, I would use treated pine for all the structural members and recycled plastic planks for walking surface and hand rails. Cry once.

Cry once. Never worked with that stuff....and my carpentry skills suck anyway, but the docks and walkways where that stuff is used for decking always pops, creaks, and snaps loudly when you walk on it.....so I'm guessing if you use that on a front deck then you won't need a doorbell.
MOPanfisher Posted May 22, 2020 Posted May 22, 2020 Use treated Lumber or be prepared to rebuild it later. Be sure to use the correct screws as the newer treated Lumber will literally eat plain screws. Think the good stuff is either double dipped galvanized or ones specced for treated lumber. Nails suck, I don't even use the hanger nails for joist hangers.
oneshot Posted May 22, 2020 Author Posted May 22, 2020 Our Son had that fake wood on his Decks. This one is going to be covered so it should last awhile. Going to put Fire Pit and TV out there. My wife wanted to basically build another room. Like I told her we already have that room the Man Cave. oneshot
