Members Dksmitht3 Posted July 8, 2020 Members Posted July 8, 2020 I am looking for some remote areas in the Ozarks for my son and I to do some trout fishing for a few days. We have fished several different states over the last several years and really enjoy getting away. The farther in the woods the better. We have always tried to get away from others and fish the smaller creeks and holes. I am not really familiar with the mountains of Arkansas but I'm sure there would be some great places to hike in and camp / fish. Looking to spend 3 - 5 days in the woods this next month if possible before he goes back to school. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. David dpitt 1
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted July 9, 2020 Root Admin Posted July 9, 2020 Crane Creek... some of the other small spring fed creeks in MO. Johnsfolly and dpitt 2
Gavin Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 MDC will send you a map for most, but there is only 30-40 miles of decent trout water in MO. Eleven Point and Current are the ones you can hike in/float in and camp on with no worries. All public land or private with a public easement in the trout water. No secret. Trails to follow, and free camping. You will see other anglers and floaters, but you can claim a spot, camp, and enjoy some solid fishing. 14-16" trout are just average on those streams..Crane...no place to camp. Little Piney might work for you...Lane Spring Campground south of Rolla, MO. Wild rainbow trout in the CG. National Forest Service, access to water, and a small fee to camp. Some electric sites. Mill Cr, and Spring Creek in 20 minutes, Roubidoux in 30-40 minutes, Current R is an hour drive. Good luck. Johnsfolly, tjm and dpitt 3

That will show you which creeks have stream bred trout. Some spots can meet your expectations of a wilderness fishing trip. A few other folks on OAF have been posting some of their catches towards their slams. Good luck and report back.
tjm Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 Trout being non native are only going to be found in easy access places, places that are basically drive to for stocking purposes. Even the few streams where trout are naturalized were stocked previously, so were accessible. If you target native fish that 30 miles of good water becomes hundreds of miles and chances of getting of the well trod path increase many fold. I don't believe you can get more ~2.5 miles from a road anyplace in the Ozarks, likely much less any place there is a stream.
