We have a cast iron dinner bell that was used to call my wife’s family in from the fields.  It is stamped 1886.  It has been in disuse for 30 years or so.  My son in law wants to restore it for my daughter.  Neither he nor I have any idea what to do.  It is rusty.  He is thinks sand and paint.  What should he do?

It is going to be outdoors when he is done.

How big is it Dutch? Make an electrolysis tank. That is what I have done for taking off rust.

If you don't care about the finish and are going to paint it get it sandblasted. Some use nut shell media. I won't do that with my cooking iron but probably would on the bell.

It is a pretty good sized one maybe 14-16” in diameter.  I will pass on your recommendation to him.  I knew you would have some suggestions.  Thanks Marty.

I’m guessing that it came by train.  It came with the place and the cellar behind the house is dated 1898 and the MOPAC line used to run through Hurley just a mile north.

Speaking of Gurus - Marty or anyone know what the name of this thing could be?  I bought it at the Army Surplus store in Springfield back in the '70's. I use it for cornbread & my sugar britches (FW for wife) calls them cornbread pucks.

I think it is a Danish pancake iron.  I'll get right on with my research! Get back at ya.
