wily Posted January 30, 2021 Posted January 30, 2021 I Found a 2015 short shaft pull start...for 1000 bucks anybody have any experience with one? Thanks
nomolites Posted January 30, 2021 Posted January 30, 2021 I have a ‘13 pro-kicker. They are a tad temperamental on cold start but I have zero issues with mine. Mike wily 1
wily Posted January 30, 2021 Author Posted January 30, 2021 He Also has 208 15hp Honda long shaft...electric start for 1500. Which on would you buy? Replacing an old evinrude on a 1436...duck boat. We usually use the big motor at Stockton... do you think the long shaft is anything to worry about on a small boat?
fishinwrench Posted January 30, 2021 Posted January 30, 2021 From what I can tell they run for about 7-8 years and then develop valve leakage issues that cause hard cold starting, unstable idle, and poor acceleration. And that can't be repaired for a reasonable amount......unless you want to do it yourself. But of course by then you'll get the typical "NLA" (No Longer Available) parts message from Mercury marine. A couple of years of use for 1000.00 isn't too bad though. So if you like it, buy it. 👍 I've said it 1000 times, and I'll say it again..... I've yet to see a 4-stroke powerhead last longer than its original set of spark plugs. So there's that. 🙄 wily 1

nomolites Posted January 30, 2021 Posted January 30, 2021 The long shaft is likely not the best fit for a jon boat, although Wrench knows better than I. Mike
wily Posted January 30, 2021 Author Posted January 30, 2021 It’s a 1970 18hp...electric start...but I don’t want to sell it. Was on my wife’s dads old richline v bottom. I’ll probably just hang onto it...reverse is going out of it

Mike Yeah you don't want a long shaft motor on a short transom boat. It will roll the boat hard to either side when turning. You won't be able to operate in as shallow of water. And the exhaust relief ports may not stay above the waterline during hole shots. wily 1
wily Posted January 30, 2021 Author Posted January 30, 2021 I probably wouldn’t use it five times a year...so probably just keep what I got. thanks for the advice.

Remove it and inspect the orientation of the upper & lower shift rods in the brass retainer clamp. Twenty bucks says that at one time someone replaced a water pump impeller and didn't reassemble it correctly. Shift problem fixed! 😊 Daryk Campbell Sr and wily 1 1
