kjackson Posted February 17, 2021 Posted February 17, 2021 Very cool. Some of that stuff I recognize--the Perrine boxes if they're not Wheatley's, and I still have and use some of the lead wire on those small spools. I've been the lucky recipient of fly-fishing gifts from folks who knew I was addicted. I have several old flies in packages that I need to do something with besides leave in their cellophane jail cells. One guy gave me his fly-tying kit that he had been given when he was in hospital recovering from wounds in WWII. While the feathers were pretty much toast, I did get a Thompson A and a lot of hooks packaged with government labels covering the originals from Alcock's and others. And one friend I took fishing hit a garage/estate sale and bought the fly stuff and gave me all the tying material. Considering the previous owner had prepped materials for a lot of flies and had his recipes and instructions along with the materials, it was a hit. The only problem is that I have more material and stuff than I can ever use unless I turn commercial--which would limit my fishing time. BilletHead and Quillback 2
tjm Posted February 17, 2021 Posted February 17, 2021 I'm a vintage fly fisher, been tying on a Thompson A since 1976, still have odds and ends of feathers and materials from about that time, still tying on hooks that I bought in bulk about '78 when I contemplated commercial tying, use Perrine boxes always and most of the time I use one of the dozen? vintage fiberglass fly rods I own. The boxes look like Perrines, if so, the large Perrine box in the picture is #99, I think, and has places for 20 snelled flies, 60 eyed flies and 6 lure compartments, per the catalog page, it is one that I don't have because I never snelled my flies. The small box would be #60 or #67 (3/4" or 7/8" thick) and has clips for 60 wet flies. The round leader tins were for soaking spare gut leaders so that you could replace a leader on the stream, gut was before my time, since nylon monofilament was invented in 1954 and by the '60s was widely accepted.
Gavin Posted February 17, 2021 Posted February 17, 2021 The leader tins are pretty cool, you don't see those very often. I agree that the boxes look like Perrine's. Flies appear to be unserviceable.
