Still wish I had your old motor on my boat.  I love my boat and the 60 just sips the gas but I wish it was a tad faster.  I think you butt dialed me last week at 12:30 in the morning?  or perhaps you meant to......i was sound asleep sorry man.

Yeah i put a new screen cover on my phone and it is so sensitive it called a million people in my pocket.  I took that POS off yesterday

Just got back from the lake had a decent day catching crappie..  No issues what so ever with it starting today. I guess it just needed a little lube

Before asking Wrench for help I searched for a similar post....I am having the same issue with the starter on my 2000 25 hp Mercury/Tracker. I was wondering what lube did you use and did you remove the starter or just spray it on while on the motor?

Typically a starter spinning but not kicking up the drive gear is caused by 1 of 3 things....

Low voltage to the starter (caused by loose/dirty connections, dead battery, or failing solenoid).

OR....

Bad brushes and corroded armature contacts in the starter (requires a starter rebuild to rectify)

OR....

Cruddy/Dry shaft and drive gear (bendix).  (Clean with parts cleaner spray, blow dry, and then lube liberally with Silicone spray or a few drops of 2-stroke oil (never put grease on it).

I did re-read the posts and noted this.  The starter is only a year & half old so I hope it's not #2. I will try option 3 first seems like the easiest. And check the battery connections.  Thanks Wrench

Sufficient battery voltage is #1

What is it ?

Had that issue occasionally on my 60 Merc. I just used a little spray lube on the starter drive, not a penetrant, they're usually piss poor lubricants.

Well I carefully sprayed the parts cleaner, blew it dry, the sprayed on the silicone lubricant. When I went to hook the battery back up it tries to start without turning the key. Have to leave the battery disconnected. Never seen this before.

Your starter solenoid is stuck closed.
