Members slabstacker Posted November 21, 2021 Members Posted November 21, 2021 Finally had enough of the deer hunting so I went back out to bois de arc conservation area this morning to do some more quail hunting. First spot was a bust, second spot we hit my dog hit a rock solid point and I walked in and quail went everywhere. It was hard to pick one out I was spinning left then right then left again but was able to pick one off there. Was not able to follow that covey up after the initial flush because the all went straight for the off limits area for the shooting range. We loaded up and went to a third spot and she pointed hard again and I walked in and flushed them, it was a smaller covey this time so it wasn’t as hard to get on one and knock it down. That covey flew straight over a small thicket and across the road onto private land so we couldn’t follow it up either. Was kind of frustrating not being able to work the coveys a bit more but had a good time and the pup do a great job, ended up with a nice male and female pair. ness, tho1mas, nomolites and 4 others 7
fishinwrench Posted November 21, 2021 Posted November 21, 2021 Man that brings back memories. 🤗 When I was younger and up in Audrain and Monroe county.....covey's of 12-15 birds were as common as house flys. I miss that SO bad. grizwilson and snagged in outlet 3 1 1
netboy Posted November 22, 2021 Posted November 22, 2021 That does bring back memories of hunts in north Mexico when we lived in Corpus Christi. We had a guy with good connections in San Fernando Mexico and he would meet us at the border in Matamoros and pay off the local border "General" and who knows who else to get our gun permits and places to hunt. Then we would hunt whitewing and mourning doves in the mornings and evenings and quail in the middle of the day. Many days you could easily shoot a case of shells each. That said, I don't think I would go back there with the stuff going on in Mexico these days.
