Those transformers that give you useable voltage into your house can and will work in reverse too. Nothing worse than a hack trying to hook a generator to his fuse box. You mean I can't just plug a generator into the dryer outlet and call it good? BilletHead 1

He wired it into the breaker box and has a box on the back of our house so if the power goes out we can move the generator to the box, throw the electric input main breakers (so we can’t accidentally kill power line repair men), pull the connecting cord out, plug in the generator and fire it up. Our generator is not big enough for the whole house at once so we have to selectively control other breakers. Having it done by a qualified person is a must and can keep you from killing someone. We're on Webster Electric Co-op. They put in a new meter base for me that has a manual transfer switch between line power and generator power. All I had to do was ask, don't think it cost anything over the usual electric bill. Apparently they care about their line crews. Which is an understatement. Every power company I've ever been associated with has been very, very safety conscious. For their crews and their customers. All it takes is paying a little bit of attention and some common sense. MOPanfisher Posted February 18, 2022 Posted February 18, 2022 Seems like every big ice storm there is at least one lineman injured or killed by someone with a home generator hooked up and not disconnected from the line. Definitely set it up to plug in at the box if possible then you are right there to throw the main. Also running it monthly is a good thing, and ethanol free fuel if diesel add something like power service to it.. More folks than I can count have fueled them up and let them set sometimes for years and are shocked that they won't start or run. Who knew? I always wanted one that runs off of a tractor PTO, but realistically I don't need any of them. Terrierman 1

Pretty well fail safe, even for a hillbilly like me. That wing ding under the meter is a whole house surge protector. Which is a joke, but again, all I had to do was ask. None of the local power companies do those anymore. They don't work very well and the companies selling and warranteeing them are GONE.
