Once again I ask help from the general expertise that is OA.

My 16 year old drives a 2011 Rogue with 150k miles.  He called from school yesterday and said his car was shaking and rattling and wouldn't accelerate.

I took it to the nearest shop and they diagnosed bad coil on #4, but wanted to change out all 4 coils and plugs...to the tune of $1200.  Several Youtube vids leads me to believe that with $200 in parts and 30 minutes, I can do the same.  This is a coil on plug system, that after removing air manifold, looks like coils and plugs are pretty easy to change out.  Am I missing something?

Could I further damage something in the engine driving the car 4 miles home?

Thanks.

If the issue is truly due to lack of fire to one cylinder.....then NO you're not going to hurt anything by driving it.   It may foul the plug and set an O2 sensor code......but that code should reset itself after 3 clean run cycles.

Swap the bad coil, and change (or remove/clean/gap/ reinstall)  the plugs.

$1200?! I replaced all my plugs and four engine coils two summers ago. Each coil was about $30 and that was the most expensive anything got. Took me about an hour with breaks. Drive it home.

Thanks for the replies.  Drove it home this morning.  Ordered plugs and coils for $170, and that wasn't even the cheapest option.  I did have to pay $139 to Nissan for "diagnosis".  Note to self, next time take it to O'Reilly's and have them run codes.

We'll get them put in next week and I'll let you know how it went.  Thanks again.

If you're smart you'll swap two coils and verify that the mis-fire moves with the suspected bad coil.   It could be a wiring or CPS (crankshaft position sensor) issue.

I'm electronically inept.  Could I just put a new coil and plug on #4 and if the issue goes away, that was the problem?

Thanks Glenn.  Now I have to search crank shaft position sensor...

On another note...you need to become an approved Evinrude shop.  There's a bunch of G2's out here with 10 year warranty's and hard to find someone to work on them.

You can, BUT there remains the possibility of a repeat failure.  Something likely caused the coil to fail. They typically don't just blink out like a tired lightbulb.

As far as I know, everyone has left here happy. 🙂  Who else needs to "approve" this place?

Factory Warranty work only pays 1/3 of what my current shop rate is, and I already have plenty of work to do.  Since BRP quit production of outboards then WHY would anyone wanna be a "dealer"?   They'd have nothing to SELL to make it worthwhile.

I have no desire whatsoever to purchase their computer diagnostic software.  90% of the time the issue is mechanical.   I'm not paying 10k just so that I can swap out a few 60.00 sensors or 200.00 injectors each year...... that just doesn't feel smart.   🤔   The ETEC motors are designed so well that usually THIS....IMG_20220304_113539787~2.jpg

is the only problem.   And nobody needs 10k worth of diagnostic software to figure THAT out.   😅

Do you just pull some fuel out and let it settle?    I’ve been following your advice to put in what I think I’ll burn but I’d like to check anyway.    The place I get gas is very busy so I assume it’s water free.

Yea, like chipmunks getting under your hood and chewing the wires. Chipmunks no longer frequent my residence. Old timer in an Iowa bar told me how to get payback.
