Even fishing for silvers in Alaska tossing a big salmon fly, my 7 weight handled the load of up to 20+ lb fish.  I don't know what you would use a 12 weight outside of saltwater for.

When you REALLY have to horse 6"-7" bluegills out of the lilly pads and brush piles, maybe?   😅

Yeah, saltwater is what it would be for.  Like @Ham said...sharks, jumbo tarpon, alligator gar, goliath grouper, billfish, big mahi maybe...tuna, maybe big reds.   How about for jumbo Blue Cats and Flatheads?

Most likely I wouldn't need a 12 wt...I'd likely be fishing with a guide for most of those saltwater species, and hopefully could use their gear.

I recently bought a new 9wt... mainly for Striped Bass, but might put that to use on some of these other species too.

Dave @Ham told me you could throw a ten-inch streamer with a one weight. You need this so you can cast a Volkswagen to tempt one of those alligator gars to bite :)

@Ham is a wizard.  I believe he could catch a 28 lb largemouth bass out of a coffee thermos. 😁  probably already has.  More than once.

@BilletHead What fly rod do you use for Blue Cats?

On the ones I caught while targeting White bass in Oklahoma I was using my 7wt TFO BVK 10'throwing sink tip.  It will outgun the 8wts I have now.  Would not have minded a bigger stick on the biggest blue I caught. My go to throwing 450 grain sink tip for hybrids is a 9' 9wt BVK. On top or light flys for those fish I will drop back to my 7wt BVK. I do have 10wt that I caught striper on, and I have used it on hybrid when throwing my big balsa topwater stuff. Not too often though.
