Snagging is done blind, if you hook up it's by accident. Grabbing is sight fishing - you can see the fish, see the hook, see the sighter and you should hook up every time. Two men and two boys can fill a wash tub with fish in less than an hour. It was how the church and community fish fries were fed. it was what was meant by "going fishing". I recall helping catch fish to be cooked for farm sales where lunch was served. I also recall being astonished when as a high schooler just moved to Warsaw I learned about people snagging spoonbill, it seemed really stupid to cast and crank for fish you couldn't even see. tjm
I think gigging and grabbing are both the result of the clarity of the Ozark streams. In my memory no one fished for fish they couldn't see even with bait, except by trotline and those were set for fish you had seen and knew were there. Thinking about now, it's understandable that people looking at muddy water would not devise ways to sight fish, but, if you grew up with nothing but clear water and gravel bottoms, blind fishing seems silly. Well, back before there was a Truman Lake and way before anybody could afford a boat, my best friend Butch, his dad and another buddy and I went to Warsaw a few times to snag spoonbill from the bank. It was a lot of fun for a bunch of redneck high school kids and a dad. His rod had a bathroom plunger for a cushion on the butt of the rod. I didn't know from BOO! about what made good or not so good fish fry back then. We were young and always hungry.
tjm
It was before Kaysinger Bluff was drowned that I lived there, only been back once since the darn was built. I learned to fish muddy water in the Osage in borrowed skiffs. Took a lot of catfish in the area of the dam, fishing from the bank, but trying to catch fish I couldn't see was strange. Do remember wading the Sac river Bass fishing and checking limb lines. Road Hunting was riding around Green and Polk counties in the Edsel killing Rabbits, Squirrels and Quail. Picked up Coke bottles for gas money .02 apiece. oneshot BilletHead

Might be. I know one thing if the lights went out you sure didn't want to grab the last Quail Breast. We had a Picnic Table for regular use. oneshot
mic
LOL... you all interesting folks around here. Actually, that makes a lot of sense. In northeast Kansas you were lucking to see down a couple of feet in any water. If it was spring feed, normally there was a green tint to pond water from alge.
