tjm Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 I always think of scuds with mud and vegetation. Ponds more than fast flowing water. But, that's an impression, it's been years since I read about them. They seem to common in tailwaters.

Every guide since the beginning of time has his non-fly fishing clients fishing them with ultralight spinning gear. Usually a double scud rig or egg and scud. I tie some of mine weighted and some not. Instead of a split shot tie a small inline swivel a couple of feet above your top scud. This allows you to use a larger diameter say 6 lb. Mono on your spool to the indicator I usually use 4X carbon from the indicator to the swivel and then a carbon 5-6-7X tippet below the inline swivel to your flys. The larger line on your spinning rod makes for a way better delivery as it turns over and separates the flys and the strike indicator and allows a much better non-tangle cast over 2or4 pound test. Lots of the guides use lite braid on their spools to the indicator. Your choice. If you don’t get bit on the BP Scuds stop by Lilleys and get a better representation. Good Luck I am basically a wade fisher and do pretty good on scuds on the fly rod up by the BS dam. Seems that the farther downstream I go... not so much. Ham 1

All he ever threw was a non descript looking grey scud he tied. He was dang good with it too. Basically, pocket lint with a hook. it’s been a while since I’ve seen him, but it been a while since I wade fished at Rim. grizwilson 1 Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future.
