kjackson Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 Is it possible to use the clear Gorilla Glue to provide a head on flies? I know that UV resin is the current, popular go-to, but using it means I have to buy and store even more stuff...and I have three tubes of the GG clear. Epoxy used to be the standard for creating the clear heads--I even have a rotating fly dryer for it-- but now the latest is to use UV stuff. Are there problems or concerns I need to deal with if I use it? TIA
Ryan Miloshewski Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 For bigger streamers, it should be no issue, although I'd still go with UV resin. I've tried GG for sealing up deer hair heads, but it just takes forever to dry, even with a dryer. It's a lot thicker than resin, too, which I do not like. Get SOLAREZ and a light is my advice. It doesn't take up that much space, it lasts, and the effects on the fly are better. “To those devoid of imagination a blank place on the map is a useless waste; to others, the most valuable part.”--Aldo Leopold

Plus, I got the big bottle of UV resin and more for 50% off hitting the right weekly flyer. fishinwrench Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 It's all very crafty and fun......but in my experience none of the flys that require UV resin are among my productive arsenal. 🤷♂️ tjm 1

kjackson Posted December 13, 2023 Author Posted December 13, 2023 Here's what started this query: https://www.rsff.org/2021/05/may-24th-fly-tying-safety-pin-minnow.html It's a fly using the head of a safety pin, and it looks just too fishy to ignore. It was developed, apparently by a fisherman in Kansas, and it does need something like UV resin or Gorilla glue to hold the head together. I tried to download the image to show instead of using a link, but I failed miserably in that regard. BilletHead 1

But it would probably be a whole lot easier with UV resin. tjm 1

But I do like UV resin for some things just because it is quick. It has it's place but it's never been required. tjm 1
fishinwrench Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 A drop of this stuff on the hook & thread when spinning deer hair, makes a muddler head last forever. BilletHead 1

Yea, I didn't say it was required, but to me it's the only streamer where I feel it helps with longevity when it's getting beat up, which it does. I can't stand head cement.
