Susie and I haven't wet a line in the last month or so with grandkids playing basketball, volleyball and and indoor street hockey on a regular basis. I suggested a quick trip to Montauk even though we don't like fishing the weekend . Weather forecast was great and the water levels were good so we made the roughly 100 mile each way trip. Lots of people fishing and the water a little green but not a big deal. We started in the campground and didn't see a lot of fish . It was overcast and the water a little green so that contributed to the lack of fish we assumed.

The campground was full but a lot of the campers were in the process of packing up so we had some open stretches to fish.  Nothing of any size in the park other than a couple 15-16" fish. The best fly for both of us was a tungsten  bead eggstasy in "fire orange" and a bead head fox squirrel nymph. The last flood in March rearranged several holes of water especially the stretches above and below the electric hole and below the cable. Susie wasn't having a good as day as usual until we hit the hole below the cable and past the cabins. She had 5 fish in the 15-16" range in about a 30" stop. Totals for the day were 29 caught and released in 3 hours of fishing.

Much better than C&R in January.  Almost a total skunk but for 1 dink.

Drove down and looked at lower end, but did not fish it.  Many were fishing Tan Vat and Baptist, I am quessing there are still many washouts from Oct 2024.

Our previous trip to Montauk was the last day of the winter season. As we drove over the first bridge, you could see a big back hole sitting above the dam getting ready to do some dredging. We went to the campground hoping to find a brown trout or two and packed up within the first 30" as the water was clouding up. Figured we could get better water in the fly zone and instead found some quality fish behind the hatchery office . Pete is correct in his memory of how it used to be and how it is now.
