Congrats on the orangespotted sunfish! Great looking fish! Now I'm jealous. Been trying for them and just haven't  caught one yet. And I'm  not even trying to catch one with a fly🙄. Congrats again!

Thanks!  I know where you can get one...it would require a trip to central Iowa.

When I was last in Iowa back in July 2018 I was hoping to try for one then, but everything was flooded. A bit longer commute from MD now than when I lived in Columbia .

Its a small window of opportunity...this shallow, tiny body of water gets an impenetrable growth of weeds during the summer.  I think the weeds keep the water cooler underneath, so its probably a good thing.   I always worry the fish will die oxygen starvation, but they've survived for 4-5 years so far.  And this past winter, the air circulation was turned off, and the it was thought the pond froze solid...but the fish are still there.

Here's the closest that I have come to catching an orangespotted sunfish, a redspotted sunfish from SE Missouri. Same type of pond as what you have described.

Redspotted Sunfish (2) - McLane Park - 14Jul19.jpg

I caught this one on a microjig that I could have fished with a fly rod:D.

That's great!  I have NEVER caught one of those!  Nor a Redbreast Sunfish, or Flier....Heck  I might be the only person on this site that hasn't caught a Longear Sunfish yet!  :)

I need to pay more attention to perch identity, I'm sure I've caught several species of  sunfish, some of them even big enough to eat.
