I appreciate everyone's input, ton of good info in here. I am going to make sure she has access to gear when she wants it and if this is more than a passing phase, set her up with one of the kids outfits and find some lessons. I just realized I have had my own fly rod for 38 years now and in retrospect really wish I had taken lessons at some point.

Anyone care to share any tips on how they introduced their kids to fly fishing? My 7 year old is fairly competent with with an open face or under spin, but a trip to Bennett yesterday seems to have started a desire to use the fly rod. There are a ton of articles and videos out there, just trying to separate out the good from the bad. Appreciate any advice guys.

Only real fishing related issue of the trip we had was at Phil's, I know I should just take it off line or PM him but... Daughter was QUITE upset Jackson wasn't in the shop when we visited!! We went down to the dock, went to the pool, no luck. I guess since we watch all the videos and One Cast episodes she assumes he is always right there. We almost always catch him when we visit, she really looks forward to it. She even asked before we got down there if "Mr Phil" would let us borrow Jackson for a trip out since he seems to be good luck. Told her I didn't think they rented the dog out unless times get tough. She is something else, never a dull moment

Fished last week Wed afternoon through Saturday mid day: Took the boat from Cooper Creek up slightly above Fall Creek in the afternoons when they were running water. Throwing stick baits of all sorts looking for Browns. Caught some small ones but nothing big. Was a little disappointed, usually when they are running that much water there are some good ones to be had (see Duane's thread from Sat, they are there I must have been doing it wrong!!) In the mornings i was getting up around 430 or 500 and fishing until 800 below outlet two a ways. Was catching them before daylight on Pine Sculpins, but once it got light out it slowed way down and I couldn't quite get it figured out after that. Size 16/18 red midge was the best I guess. Lot of just under the surface activity between starting to get light and when the sun hit the water. Thought the soft hackle would be the ticket but no so much. Even tried a few dry's after my indicator got violated the third time in a few minutes but no luck. Sat mid-day the little one wanted to go try it so we stopped at Phil's and picked up some 1/125oz jigs to throw under floats. She had a few hits but wasn't quick enough to hook up. Still had fun and I had the cutest partner in the Trophy area

Same here, brother and I thought we had it locked up only to pull up a stringer of heads. Been ~40 years and I am still mad!!!

Great thread- so much to be learned about what works and what doesn't from guys who do it all the time. When you go 3-4x a year it takes forever to get this knowledge. Two weeks from today I will be back, time is dragging........

A few jig and jerkbait fish from my trip last month
dnj21 replied to Seth's topic in Upper Lake Taneycomo
My Mother in law has a time share so we visit in October with the family, do a little fishing while everyone is in bed. The last 22 years though we have been doing a Feb trip with a half dozen guys. Some great fish caught and outstanding memories shared. Plus Branson in Feb is much more palatable than a month from now when we always go down to celebrate my birthday. The side roads are your friend!! -

Weedless Swimbait hook?
dnj21 replied to dnj21's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
I ordered some Owner Beast screw lock 6/0 quarter ounce hooks, but since last weekend was Mothers Day I didn't get out to test them and report back yet. Hoping this weekend, but we will see. Got me thinking about a new Swim Bait rod set up for Fathers Day- maybe a new Tatula SV reel to throw it on, mmmm....... -
Weedless Swimbait hook?

What kind of Swim Baits are you throwing? I have only thrown Yum and Keiltech, trying a new one out this year. Kind of a home run proposition for me, I haven’t caught a lot on the bigger sizes, but the ratio of 3-5# is pretty good. Always looking to learn something new and this is one of my projects for this year. Thanks!! -
What are you guys using for a screw in weighted swim bait hook? I don't use very often, but as a big fish bait I think it has the potential. Especially this time of the year. Using Optimum Boom Boom in 4.5", recommends a 6/0 if that matters

Sounds like the FLW guys are finding them down at TR today a little better looking at the updates. Would have been a good day to be off and go see what was biting......

Guy from work is fishing it and his partner is pre-fishing all week. REAL slow, lost a 4# boat side yesterday but no other "BBB" level fish. They are really scratching their heads as to where to go or what to do. Not sure where they are pre-fishing.....

Great pics, thanks for sharing! What port are you guys going out of? We always stay down in Akumal, but Puerto Adventuras is where we see a lot of people go out of. Haven't done a trip in a few years, making me want to go again...... Keep it coming!! -
I have spent very minimal time in the Gravois arm, but my wife is thinking about renting a small place for a weekend here in a few weeks. How much boat traffic is there in this area in late April? Specifically, is a 1754 semi-V Grizzly enough boat or will I get swamped? I am thinking I could find Bass, but unsure how "exciting" of a ride it might be. Appreciate any thoughts....... Thank you!

She liked this spot best so we tried that at the whistle Friday morning. Caught a nice 14" Rainbow on a John Deere jig, all by herself! Very excited about the whole process and we had a lot of fun. Wish we would have stayed a few more days........

Headed down mid-week for a couple days. I have spent many days down there over there years fly fishing, but my 6 year old got chest waders from Santa and is bound and determined to wade and fish this time. Where do you guys start your kids down there where its safest to wade and maybe catch some? Doesn't matter what zone, I have fished 1 & 2 and been all over 3. We will have gear for whatever zone we hit. I will have her pfd on and stay right with her, but she is determined to do it like she has watched Dad do it. She is roughly 48-50" tall.

Especially after watching Poche the day before, it was fresh in my mind.

I was wrestling a Hybrid yesterday with a mouth full of Jerkbait and was thinking "There must be a better way"....

You will LOVE it- we stayed at Coba with our daughter last Feb. Normally stay on the Adult side (Si'an Kaan) but with her we tried Coba. Building was right by the water park, close to the tram route and a quick walk even with bad knees to the buffet. Make sure to ride around and see the other properties. You can use any of the facilities at Tulum (beach, bars, buffets) but Akumal and Si'an Kaan aren't included. Still fun to go look at them.. Make your A La Carte reservations when you get there first thing, choices can get limited quickly. Though the food is good and service is good to great at the buffets. Same with the bars, they will make anything you can come up with. Beer choices are limited (Dos Equis & Tecate if i remember correctly) but you can go in to town and get anything you want to keep in your room. A few dollars tip here and there and they will find you when you go to eat or order drinks Send me a PM if you have any questions, I don't want to bore everyone on here with resort specific details.

I have been in there a few times, it is worth stopping if you have never been. It is impossible to walk out without buying anything, even if you are in a hurry. Like Dutch said, they have colors you never see in person elsewhere. If nothing else talking to the guys working in there is worth it. Pretty knowledgeable and very in to the sport without being annoying.
-
Phil- Any particular color you start with? We generally Troll sinking Rapalas in brown trout or rainbow trout first, then try silver or gold. Never thought to try Bombers. Have not caught any 5#+ fish this way, but generally a good way to catch a Brown for us Five more weeks and we will be down to try again.

Not the green we had hoped for but I'm not complaining.

Excellent pictures! Thanks for sharing........ -
Nothing but hard water down here this year, last year I was in shirt sleeves still so I am going through withdrawals. How hard is it for a first timer to catch a few bass up there? About 90 min trip for me so it isn't too bad, but I have never been there. Willing to roll the dice, now that duck season is over I am ready to pull the boat blind off, put the trolling motor back on and throw a jerk bait again.

That is EXACTLY what our bear guide in Idaho told us years ago. Looking at me as he tells this to my brother and step brother. They found great humor in that..........
