I use 8-10 foot rods with braid to the 3 way swivel, clip a float to another arm of the 3 way, and tie a fixed leader to the other arm. I also use Punisher jigs as well as a few others. I haven't caught fish like I want to or expected to so far.
Having said that. I've caught all three black bass species, crappie, panfish, and Trout.
If you are shore bound due to generation, you can scratch out trout with a FNF. You should shorten up you leader so that you don't hand up constantly and swing a jig in that current and catch trout. I caught about 5 trout an hour which I didn't think was too bad. The heavy current works the way for you. Just watch that bobber and lift when it acts differently.
