  1. I am honored to inherit the fishing gear of my late father-in-law. He was a good man. I am glad I did get the opportunity to get to know him – I just wish we had more time. My buddy Bob and I plan on leaving my bass boat at home and head to Sunburst on the NFOW for our fall fishing trip. I got out his fly rods and reels. I have two reels: a Pflueger Medalist and a South Bend Open-A-Matic (I know the general opinion of these but I have used it a bit in Marble Creek and I like it). I have three rods: South Bend/359-9’ Shakespeare/A13627-9’ Heddon/#30-Trout-8’ D-HDH My questions are: Should I replace the line on the reels? Can I determine the taper of the line by looking at it? How do I tell the weight of the rods? The only thing written on the rods are what I noted above. And any other advice would be appreciated.
  2. Tandem spinner bait.
  3. I am near-sighted and I get my eyes checked after each deer season because there has to be a reason I never see any deer.
  4. eg, Hold the Ctrl key and move the mouse wheel up and down and that will change the resolution on the web page.
  5. Sooo.....they were.....uh......shooting the moon, eh.
  6. Wrench, That Lone Star is pure class.
  7. Uhhhh, no.......its hidden, ya know.
  8. Yes, the motor had been overhauled in '02. I kept the outboard from the Quachita that I overhauled in '92 so I have two fully functional identical outboards.
  9. The old boat was a 1972 Quachita. Here it is on Mark Twain Lake. It had stick steering but I manufactured the console after I bought the 75-horse Chrysler. I had to abandon the boat -- the transom rotted and the floor was water soaked. The cap did not separate from the hull. It broke my heart. But I was able to find the boat of my dreams in Chicago, last year. A 1979 Chrysler Fin and Fun.
  10. I have done it successfully. It WAS a bit ugly, though. If I recall the shield is one conductor and much be joined and the center conductor is the other and must be joined, also. Solder the connections and use shrink wrap everywhere.
  11. Oh no I am serious. I caught a small bluegill on a wee craw and that was it.
  12. I understand it is a custom around here to conceal locations that produce fish. But there doesn't appear to be any concern about advertising areas that don't produce fish. So....I put my cedar-stripper in on the Bourbuese at Reikers Ford, paddled upstream a mile and a half and did not catch jack-sh(poop)it. But it was a great day and that canoe is a hoot to paddle.
  13. It just ain't right that mammals seek the company of reptiles!
  14. And...... statistics also say that 76.89% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
  15. So it has nothing to do with temperature fluctuations but everything to do with barometric pressure fluctuations.
  16. KDHX DOES have two good bluegrass shows: The Saturday morning show is a bit more progressive and Walter and Willa tend to be more traditional on Sunday. And the website displays the songs being played. Nobody mentioned Allison Krauss and Union Station. Her voice is amazing, the musicianship is top-notch -- especially Jerry Douglass on dobro -- and Dan Tyminski sang "Man Of Constant Sorrow" in O'Brother.
  17. Not a word....not a #$%^&%^ word!
  18. I deal with the dashing-urbanites in lawn chairs fishing on the ramp itself. I can chase them out if I pretend to ignore them -- but the large rocks used to support the poles stop the wheels on my trailer.
  19. Two. One a cheap rod/good reel for crankbaits, spinner baits.... and another a good rod/cheap reel for feeling the bottom with a jig, rubber worm.... Sometimes I pack an ultralight.
  20. Yeah it burns my biscuits to see beer bottles thown in the trash when we used to refill them. Whenever I am at the local tavern I always drink draft beer: the barrel is refilled, the glasses are washed and reused and I recycle the beer.
  21. When I am using a baitcaster I know exactly where the bait is going. With spinning equipment I don't.
  22. It seems to me to be similar to the difference between firearms deer season and bow season: Firearms Deer Season involves a little hunting, a little card playing, a little washer playing and a little beer drinking with guys you don't get to see often enough. Bow Season is hunting and solitude. We can enjoy both, you know.
  23. Are those that are using floro spooling their reels with it or tying on a leader?
  24. Ely is just an amazing town. Nobody in Ely is from Ely because they can't stand the winters. I have done some ice-fishing via dog sled up there and it was amazing. But, Trophy, I suspect the ice fisherman will have caught all of the ice by July and there won't be any left.
  25. My father-in-law gave me his fishing equipment before he passed away. I did get out one of his two fly rods and messed around with it the past couple of years. I got the other two rods out of the shed this week. One is a bamboo fly rod and the other is a Garcia Conolon 2508t spinning rod. In his tackle box was a Daiwa spinning reel that I had to disassemble, flush out and re-lubricate. I attached the reel to the rod and spooled up and was amazed at how sensitive this rod is. I have a better than average graphite rod and a St. Croix that I bought at the local tackle store but this rod is amazing. Everything that is going on at the end of the line can be felt at the handle. I have done some research and learned that Conolon was used in aircraft during WWII and since wars cannot last forever they went into rod building. Garcia bought the process in the early sixties. Does anyone else own any of these rods?
