South Dakota smallie record broken

STOP IT, you keep up the Irish Whiskey talk I am will have to buy some. Just moved my son off to college today, so I can't afford that stuff. -
There are certainly the issues with intakes, however there are also issues with the smell of millions of zebra mussels left behind after a lake rise, the photos of zebra mussel covered bushes, and picnic tables from Bull Shoals are an example. In addition they cause problems with dam control structures, etc. The clearer water does allow for additional sunlight to penetrate the water column, which will allow photosynthetic plants to grow deeper and better. I don't think they will ruin anything, but they are an exotic species that has little in the way of predators, as a rule exotics are not great additions to the environment.

I know several guys who have gone from LOZ one day and then to Pomme or Truman the next day. Although it is much more likely that some one would transport the veligers than even a tiny one if boat was only in the water for a day. I heard a report that zebra mussels were confirmed in Truman recently but haven't heard any more on it. Certainly no the end of the world for fishing but would rather live without them.

AC current and water can be a dangerous mix. Wired right and maintained/checked regularly no worries. I do like that a lot of docks are installing solar power, panel, converter/inverter, and batteries to store the electricity. I dont know enough about the solar engineering to understand it per se, but have had it explained to me one who does, that it is much safer. All that aside the light is pretty cool.

When I was a kid, with an old Ithaca M49 single shot lever action rifle I fully intended to corner the market for squirrel tails to sell to Mepps. I had a whole box of them and stored them in an out building and of corse when spring arrive and crappie fishing got I forgot them. Bugs and mice ended my young attempt to become a millionaire without having sold one. I used to fish the creeks around here with Mepps spinners, the buck tails and the red white ones. A couole Mepps (because you didnt dare return home and admit to losing one) and a couple offset beetle spin tyoe lures, jeans and tennis shoes, good thing dads old truck had vinyl seays ans floors. But he always like to see a stringer of black perch (green sunfish). Now I am wanting to buy a few Mepps just to have again.

Yep, they should be pounding the Hickories, live easing up to a tree and it sounds like rain from hickory nut pieces falling. Have thrown sticks and rocks to get them to move around to where I could get a shot, sent the dog, easing around etc. Don't need much of the head to slip a bullet into but gotta have more than a leg or fluffy tail. Have done the summer hunt for several years, but used to terrorize the squirrels. Nowadays I am.more likely to complain that all the different deer seasons mess up some of the best squirrel hunting time of the year.

Lots of foliage and spider webs to the face are the worst thing about summer squirrel hunting. I have spent more than a few minutes of my young life trying to out maneuver a squirrel, sure had a lot of fun doing it too.

Hmmm, I will just bring some Crown Royal and coke. (coca cola that is) -
It depends somewhat on who is doing the trapping. The MDC policy for ones they trap is dead and buried to prevent any concerns for transmission of disease to people, however slight. Some of the Dept. of Ag volunteer trappers kill them and process them as a sort of "payment" for their volunteer work. Don't need to poke them with sticks, they will pretty quickly get foamy at the mouth and they seem to be ticked off as soon as you get close to the trap. If there is a large adult sow with young, it gets kapowed as soon as the trappers walk up to the trap, as one said after shooting a sow from 50 yards out, "I didn't want no crap off of momma". Then the littler ones are just running around until they catch bullets too. MDC trappers have in the past taken blood samples, but not always, not sure if the Dept. of Ag. trappers did or not, don't remember them doing it.
-
I have helped MDC and Dept. Of Ag. A couple of.times and it is a lots of sweaty miserable work. The traps were mostly set primarily in July/ august time frames on the public grounds, mostly because during the hot miserable weather the dog hunters didn't want to be out, plus they don't like to run the dogs when snakes are active. Other times of the year yiu had to worry about keeping locations quiet lest someone with dogs run through the area scattering them, or having the trap/bait out before deer season so as to not accidentally create a hunting over bait for someone who might not even know a bait site was there. I hope to help again in the future, but sometimes life gets in the way. I hope the trapping success goes through the roof or at least hits the 80% of the population to overcome the reproductive capabilities of feral hogs.

It would be a powerful cover scent for sure.
-
The way the new rule reads is that hunting hogs will only be banned on public lands. Private land or in self defense are fair game.

Every year at our annual dove hunt, among other things there will be a couple pans of jalapenos cut in half and seeded, filled with cream cheese, wrapped in bacon and baked in a foil pan.And you are right Chief they are GOLD. I can only imagine that they would be even better in a good grilled cheese sammich.

I have always wanted to.make a trip to Texas, and take along tools, leather gloves, chainsaw etc. Find the right area and knock on a few doors, explain that I would like to trade work for the opportunity to hunt pigs. Figured that first trip down I wouldn't even take a rifle, just tools. In the right place I think it would work, but I also suspect the ranchers get several people a year wanting to hunt for free.
-
Pigs are one of the most adaptable critters there are. If there was a way to have them as a hunting option and not have them take over I would be all for them. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be they will out compete, out reproduce and destroy areas for other wildlife. I have my doubts as to how well the trapping only will work. I would like to see MDC combine some dog hunting with the trapping. If the trap cathe 6 out 8 pigs, put the dogs on those last 2 and run them to ground. Eliminate the sounder and move on. I am afraid that the population is already beyond what can be controlled.

Well heck then if walmart has them I should be able to try them.
-
They try to swim across LOZ and get hit by the big boats. Or maybe when the little ones get in the water the big old flatheads get them. Who doesn't like pork.
-
Mmmmm, never had and gourmet sardines, but like the cheap ones too.

If the whiskey gets to flowing, he might argue with himself, lose that arguement, get mad at himself and eventually start a fight with himself. If he beats himself up too bad he can then drive himself to the Emergency Room. -

Can we have a fish fry too? Hopefully some Kentucky fillets. Come on I had to camouflage the fact that I invited myself by trying to drag some TR guys into the topic. -
As long as you don't sink to tuna helper it's all good.

I have a friend who took a job at West Yellowstone for the Forest Service, average temps have been right around freezing every morning lately. Doesn't bode well for winter for him.

MDC certainly lobbied to get the other state and federal land management agencies to go along.
