  1. I am one of the 25 or so people in the state that actually like fruit cake. Every year my Uncle sends me one from Cullen Street Bakers in Dallas TX. Cold winter evening, cup of hot chocolate or tea for my wife, mmmmm good. But then I like pickled pigs feet too so what do I know.
  2. Generally what will happen on a lake with zebra infestation is 5 hey will go through a tremendous population boom for a few years, then crash, and finally rebound to a somewhat sustainable population. Although with the extreme elevation fluctuations on Bull Shoals they may go through several boom bust cycles. They are there to stay though, just try to keep them out of TR for as long as possible if not already too late.
  3. Crock pot. If it wont make it tender nothing will. It will not have the same flavor as a nice grilled piece of venison, but it will be tender. Add taters onion carrots, put it all in one morning on low and eat it for supper. Use a little of the juice to make some gravy.
  4. Maybe he was trolling for a BIG striper. Were there hooks underneath.
  5. it's almost a physical pain to deny my juvenile tendencies of wanting to comment.
  6. Well not a stellar day but I did add black and white crappie, wiper, and a hybrid bluegill of some sort.
  7. Well so far I have caught 4 keeper walleye, one short walleye and a short bass. All on one trip at the end of March. Since then thanks to some medical issues I have been sidelined, however Dr. gave me clearance last Friday and 7 vaccinations so today with any luck at all the numbers will change a buddy is coming by and we are headed crappie fishing. Surely to goodness I can catch something today.
  8. For the sake of this discussion let's say that for the last 20 plus years the MDC has been the most useless, backward, do nothing organization that ever existed. Today for some reason they got religion or drank their own bathwater whatever but have decided to step up and do the right thing. So they take a step in the right direction, at keast we all seem to believe it is, but don't suddenly follow our directions blindly and all the way. Do we berate them for not going all the way as we want or do we as sportsmen, taxpayers, citizens, and lovers of streams and smallmouth support them in this step and work with them for the next step a few years down the road? We are a pretty small group compared to others who have a particular fish they adore, even non native trout get more attention, however we are headed in the right direction. With the change in regs there will be a new crop of college students looking to study the results and more data will be available for the next round. And BTW the commissioners seem to have a reputation for standing up to any and all political pressures put on them by the legislature, why because the MDC has the backing of the majority of the people in MO, and the legislature knows it. I for one do not want a politically run wildlife management agency.
  9. That looks to be about #4 in the world. Or at least my 20 seconds of Google seach indicated that, and the Internet is pure truth.
  10. Hmm maybe some of those snags I have hit crappie fishing were just big blues and didn't want to move.
  11. Looks like he is extending arms some as well. Be that as it may that is a hell of a smallmouth.
  12. The day I let folks ruin my fishing is the day they win. I fish for enjoyment, relaxation, and a fish dinner. Obnoxious or rude folks have no place in my circle of concern, whether they are in a bass boat, kayak, pontoon etc. or whatever. Never let a day on the water be ruined by anyone, dont give them.that power.
  13. Excellent, they are making a comeback on Pomme.
  14. I sure hope the "bride" in the tutu was female, and.not one of the school bus boys who finished last in the night hike.
  15. While I only get to go gigging on occasion I can guarantee that most giggers will go out of their way to avoid smallmouth, mostly because they are not nearly as tasty as a sucker. Plus most giggers are also creek smallmouth fishermen and would rather catch them on rod and reel. There are a small subset of folks who will gig any and every fish they can, those are the ones I would like to see in front of a judge.
  16. Being aware of and being able to prove it to the satisfaction of a prosecuting attorney are not the same thing. Fishing pressure alone is not going to clean out 20 miles of river. Every stream has its own set of issues and there is not enough time or $ available to 100% study them and make special regs for each one. Likewise MDC trying to come up with a plan NOT the end all be all solution. If it is a step in the right direction support it and be ready to support the next step in a few years if this appears to be going well.
  17. Unbroken was a good read. Never heard of him till I read the book a few years ago, now they make a movie about him. Don't want to see it though, so often the movie is so different from the book it just ticks me off.
  18. I simply fillet them like a crappie. It's a little trickier on the blade turn, and a narrow blade helps. For many years before I 3vwr heard of fillet ing we scaled them cut their heads off and gutted. Pan fried the whole thing, the crispy tails were a little treat we thought. Never fished for them in winter though.

    What's Cooking?

With a cast iron skillet an charcoal its likely to be good. I am a chocolate weenie, I do like the occasional Hershey milk chocolate but dark chocolate always tastes bitter to me. That said I have a wife and a grown daughtwr, the is way more dark chocolate in my house than milk. If women get grouchy throw dark chocolate at them, if they charge play dead, it's the only viable defense.
  20. If there was a pile of bluegill, walleye, crappie, and flathead belly, and I could only have one I would be in a terrible quandry as to which one to pick.
  21. They are not quaggas or zebras, they will be attached by the time they are the size of grains of sand. One of the tests for presence of zebras is to hang a plate of glass in the water, when the veligers attach and start to grow it feels like sandpaper.
  22. Not zebras then. Maybe some aquatic insect larvae or small bryozoan but haven't been able to find a pic of anything I thought really looked like yours.
  23. Doesn't look a zebra mussell. By that size they would be permanently attached. Is there a noticeable shell. Regular mussels don't attach to things I don't believe.
  24. Catch me a bucket of big bluegill and I will come get them. Delicious!
  25. There can be only one! Extra points if you know what movie that line is from.
