  1. Vernon, we have elected you as spokesman.
  2. I think when I finally retire I will avoid all topic about the COE, until then I am just going to avoid them, except for specific topics that I might have some control over. Overall policy and the how/why nope. Or at least I will try my darndest to avoid them.
  3. My lettuce, since and radishes have long since gone to the compost heap. However the maters are loving the warm weather. Squash are growing well, and will transplanting a bunch of Cantelouopes soon. Sweet corn just got planted last week due to circumstances. Now I could use a nice one inch rain.
  4. In the late 80's when I worked there, many of the local hard core bass fisherman started night fishing by Memorial day and stayed with it until after labor day.
  5. We stepped it down to 1500 cfs today. Will run at that until Thursday morning when we bump it up to 3000 cfs for the day so the MSHP can do some swift water boat traing, then back down until next week when MDC has a training. Usually it is stepped down a little more steadily, but the trainings and the timing altered it somewhat. There a TON of small crappie in the river and probably all down the river. Not sure what it will be running over the weekend, one for cast called for 50 cfs. They will run the models again later this week and let us know.
  6. Her name is Mary. Things are a little better, some of the meds are working, and some are kicking her butt. However at least she is up around right now. Getting the meds at the right time is tough, she gets confused easily, am going to try putting them in envelopes with the times to take them on the front. My wife will be home in a couple days so that will help as well. I truly appreciate everyone's bought and prayers, some days I can almost feel a calming hand on my shoulder telling me to calm down and relax.
  7. While out spraying some thorns etc. this evening I saw several japanese beetles on some serecia lespedeza stems. Checked the orchard and didn't see any there yet. Not sure how to feel about the beetles rating the serecia, I have a major dislike for both. Hope they eat the serecia and then choke on the last bite.

    What's Cooking?

I like a light char on stuf, that looks about right. From the description I though you were going to make a rough hash out of the left overs. Love a GOOD hash.
  9. Cotton mouth. Triangular shaped head, Zoom in on the first pic of him and you can see that edge over the eyes that always reminds me of a flat top marine harcut.
  10. Transplant wild strawberries onto it, then when they go crazy and out of control spray them with roundup and plant vinca or Perry winkle. I have transplanted wild strawberries twice and ended up spraying them out both times after they got a taste of fertilizer and went crazy. Thought I would have wild ones to pick, nope just a lot of wild strawberry plants.
  11. It will settle down son enough for the holiday folks to stir it up again. By then it's just too hot for me to take anymore.
  12. Yep still running 3500 until sometime next week probably.
  13. When it gets all coversed in vines and plants it will be hidden. If you are ever trapped in it during a storm your rescuers will think it's just a pile of vines. . We too had a cellar or whatever we called where we stored canned stuff. It was fairly well sealed uo, nothing bigger than a medium sized dog ever got into it. I know I would have taken my chances outside with a parachute and steel rod in my hand before I spent more than 4 seconds in that dark, damo, spoder infested torture chamber. Yours looks much nicer. My home is earth contact on 3 sides so there are inch concrete walls on the 3 sides, I already live in a large storm shelter.
  14. Gentlemen (and ladies too), I find myself in need of a few prayers, oddly not for me for my elderly mother. A few weeks ago she developed a case of shingkes, the treatment went fairly well, but has had a relapse for lack of a better term. Lots of pain and a second round of meds, which leave her wobbly and somewhat disoriented. Sadly the decline has been ongoing for a while, has been extremble painful to watch the mental (and physical) decline of a person who was a highly skilled RN surgical nurse, taught math and on any given day could work me into the ground, fix supper and help with homework. Forgetting things she has known all her life like how to knit or take her medications. My wife is currently out of the country and my sister (also an RN) is here helping out as I am not a very good care giver. However she is still as stubborn as ever, trying to talk her into moving downstairs into one of my kids own room where she would be one a single level, no stairs, her own bathroom etc. but so far no luck there. So any prayers for healing, wisdom etc. would be greatly appreciated as we figure out the best path forward for her.
  15. As I understand it I think they are fishing for scholarships instead of paychecks. Hopefully I will be able to attend the weighth in.
  16. Not being a salt water guy what are they. They look delicious!
  17. A big largemouth in a river, while not as nice as a big smallie is still good. River bass will put lake bass to shame. Even when you lose a good one that you just couldn't turn, or it come up andntailwalks and throws the lure, or even blasts and misses an early morning topwater, well it's still a good day. You always tend to dwell on the lost ones while enjoying lunch in the shade but that is part of what keeps it interesting.
  18. My 90 HP is a cold natured starter if not used for a while. I wold pump the bulb till hard and fight it to start it. Finally go smart enough to realize I was flooding it. Now I will give it a squeeze before I leave home and them crank it with no choke at the ramp, and it will usually fire within 10 seconds, after that it will start immediately. But my bulb will pump tight so may not have a a anything in common.
  19. The Teen Anglers are going to have a tournament here on Pomme de Terre Lake, on Sunday July 16th. The weigh in event will be held in Outlet Park below the dam. I believe they said it was a championship event but could have misheard that part. It will be a fairly big deal with 200 or so boats and 1k or more spectators at the weigh in.
  20. I don't lock mine, I do push the button to put it to sleep before I pocket it. As long as I do that I have never had a problem.
  21. Fish do like vegetation for the shade, cover and it's where the bait likes to hide. Unfortunately some forms become very aggressive and will take over a body of water and choke out the more preferred native vegetation. Hydrilla is one of the bad ones, has been found in a lot of private ponds in the Pomme, Sac, and James watersheds. The good thing so far is that it is responds well to a level of herbicide (primarily Komeen and Sonar I believe) that doesn't also kill the native plants. It likely got its start due to an aquarium dump or fish/aquatic veg tranfer. It transports easily, will reproduce from clippings, tuber and turions, waterfowl and critters like muskrats can transfer it overland to other bodies of water. A lot of time, effort, and expense is being spent to inspect, document and eradicate it whenever found. The treatment process lasts roughly 5 plus years from the last live plant found. Sorry for going off on a tangent, have been involved in this program for a few years now, waiting for the day and announcement of "no new finds".
  22. They may not be "cool", but they are delicious. Oddly enough my favorite catfish for eating are Flathead belly meat and bullheads. Used to have a pond that was infested with them. But you could catch a few 12 inches and go from swimming to sizzling in 10 minutes. Dad used to occasionally request them for supper.
  23. I used "fondling" as one of them has a distinctive gritty fel, another emits a unique odor when squished. Which I wasn't very good at detecting. Also they were militant on the plants, even the buckets were marked and only used in certain watersheds. No way are they gonna be a part of causing any spreading of things like hydrilla, their boat decontamination procedures were impressive too.
  24. Good stuff. I have looked at the photos and drawings etc.have them in my office even. Of hydrilla, elodea, milfoil, coontain, parrot feather etc. And it helps, but the hour I spent at an MDC hands on training, fondling all of them in buckets of water was a solid gold.
