That is a good fish story, thanks.
  2. Yep, paddling ain't fishing. I'm planning an overnighter this weekend, 8 miles total and that's with an outboard. Much rather spend my precious time fishing, BBQing and relaxing than traveling.
  3. Yeah, enjoy because a team like this is hard to come by. I received a set of Friday game seats as a gift this winter and I'm getting a kick out of going.

Agreed, there are plenty of idiots on both sides of the power boating fence but the rivers need all the advocacy they can get.
  5. Clean and dress your line, often.
  6. As a red blooded American male I too am fascinated by snakes though I admit I don't have much knowledge about them. Hands down the snakiest place I have ever been is Reelfoot lake. There have been occasions where everywhere you looked you seen a snake. In the course of a days fishing many dozen, maybe a hundred. A fasinating place for that reason as well as the amazing fishing.
  7. I fished it twice for Bluegill. First time we caught several really nice fish before we were run off the lake by an vicious downpour. The fish we caught inspired us to try again. The second trip was disappointing, very few fish of size and no real bed activity. Probably more pretty a lake than productive.
  8. Wow, those are nice fish, caught on soft tackle too, excellent. Did you catch that last one on a public boat ramp?
  9. That's what I'm talking about.
  10. Sorry I can't help with the cracked foot. I know that rock well and my boat wears several scars from it. The foot on my jet has had the crap beat out of it, I'm curious about the plastic models too.
  11. Interesting fishing destination, thanks for the report. The driftless area is moving further up my short list.
  12. I wonder how many folks were gravel bar camping last night?
  13. Yeah, that made my morning. Thanks
  14. It was kind of crazy In harvester, thought the truck was going to blow away.
  15. When I was a young man visiting friends in Centerville I had an older gentleman reach his hook out to shake my hand. Ill never forget the feel of his cold steel grip and his laughter at my awkwardness. The word was that he lost his hand dynamite fishing Black River. I vaguely recall former MDC fisheries biologist Otto Fajen telling the story of a conservation officers from Sullivan who was missing fingers from doing the same, hows that for irony. I believe there is still the occasional dynamite fishermen in the Ozarks, old traditions fade slowly.
  16. Sad story. That's it, I'm loading the boat tonight and going fishing while I still can.
  17. Yep 10 horse limit is a pain, in fact I'll be in the market for a new one before next season. The lakes with the limits are awfully peaceful.
  18. I feel your frustration but you have to think about what you have, Wife, kids, mortgage. For a younger person the other option is to have nothing, maybe live in a van down by the river. I guess the trick is to find some balance between having a normal life and having a fishing life.
  19. Thanks for the Big River report. Last hour of the day would be a bummer pattern if it held all season.
  20. I dont know much about boats but I do know about southern Illinois 10 horse limit lakes and your set up sounds perfect. The lake I just spent the holiday weekend on had 9.9 outboards on everything from party barges to big glass bass boats and its the way to go. One things for sure getting around with a trolling motor only doesnt cut it on any lake bigger than 20 or 30 acres. Theres nothing like having honker southern IL bluegills bending a 3wt fly rod double.
  21. The yellow spider will work for the larger members of the Sunfish family too.
  22. It was inevitable.
  23. Lots of choices, if I were doing a fly fishing only trip I would stick to smaller water, maybe a creek. It's much easier to draw a smallmouth up from a three foot deep hole than a fifteen foot deep hole. The golden rule for peace and seclusion is to go somewhere that is a pain in the rear for your average fisherman, either because the shuttle logistics or access. Good luck.
  24. Yep, that what gets me. It's been a long while since I've dumped but I usually do an emergency exit a couple of time a year. Couple of weeks ago I took a sharp limb across the belly when I didn't execute an E exit quick enough.
  25. Excapes from a private spring and branch, probably the one down at Slab Town.
