  1. We took our 4 & 6 year old girls on their first float this year...They absolutely loved it..I cant see a reason not to take them if you are competant in a canoe....PFD's, and swimming ability is a must have though. Make sure they know how to float on their backs with their feet downstream too...just in case you cant get to them immediately.
  2. Amidon is a very pretty spot...but really skinny water this time of year...The Castor is a wasting stream that goes underground and re-emerges in several reaches...so its often a long walk between areas that hold fish...Best bet is to bridge hop....its not really floatable until you ge down to 34...There are a couple campgrounds there that might run a shuttle for you.
  3. Reminds me of the Gartside Softhackle Streamer...with rabbit instead of palmered marabou...the Gartside will cast alot easier.
  4. Nice whoopty! LOL...
  5. Here's a great place to make a map.... http://www.cares.missouri.edu/
  6. For $50 you cant go wrong..That would be a good boat to mount a 3hp, or a troller on and run it around a small lake, pond, or a big slow river...Wouldn't want it on anything shallow, or twisty...but it would do in a pinch. I'd save up for a 17' tandem in Royalex or Polylink...no keel, not too much rocker.
  7. Have not floated the 15'...but the 16' buffalo paddles well..Might make a good solo for the big & tall.
  8. They usually start the first week of November...usually have them all stocked by the 15th.
  9. Yep...lots of slow water and we did 11 miles in 7 hours....We would have liked more time to fish...but we had wives and kiddo's waiting at SAB. Some great scenery and wildlife on that float. Will do it again.
  10. Found some ripe persimmons this weekend...Ate a few, then cut open some of the seeds to amuse the kids......There was a spoon in every one. No forks...no knives. Looking forward to cold and snowy.
  11. Dead drift under a bobber....or short fast strips...anything in-between.
  12. Good for you..Floated that stretch earlier this year (Coldwater to SAB)...Is that boulder garden the one with the ledge drop at the end?..Fun little drop.
  13. Over-inflated swim bladder maybe?
  14. The bolete sounds like Sullius...maybe edible...but not worth the bother...the tan one...might be a Milky Cap (Lactarius sp)...does it ooze a latex like substance when you damage one? Some milky's will make you sick...some are good eats...Might try over on the Missouri Mycology Society's facebook page.
  15. The bolete looks like a sullius. Do the have a sticky/ slimy caps. I'd pass. Think you are spot on with the other two. Nothing worth eating IMO. Hens might fire after this weeks rain. Hoping they do .
  16. The 17' canoe...really is the perfect extended float boat...shy of a jon....We usually bring at least two chain saws on winter floats...We get the wood that that summer campers don't have the need for (or the means to get with hand tools). My folding bucksaw works great for a small group...A bag of match light charcoal works great for a solo trip...just enough for two nights..or a small bag for one night. No wood needed...instant fire.
  17. Looks great..Thanks for the heads up....My hen trees were bare last week...nice rain today though....may have to go look in a day or two.
  18. Kayaks are fun to float....but...it seems that kayakers always have a little extra that needs a place in my tandem canoe on multi-day floats...usually offer to take their cooler, and whatever. Plenty of room for it......and their beer tastes good.
  19. I know plenty of folks who have been down...The aren't arresting anyone unless its for something else.
  20. I've attached an excel file. More gear than you need for an overnight...but subtract as needed...first tab is a gear checklist, second...contacts for all involved...should include nearby hospitals & emergency #s...third tab is the meal plan, last tab is for the map and float plan...usually add a tab for expected arrivals & departures...if folks aren't arriving/leaving at the same time. Float Trip Playbook.xlsx
  21. Prongs is MDC...out of the park land....but kinda small water.....Figure that most of those Upper Jack's fish have started heading downstream toward bigger water right now. Jack's...seems to be a starts late end early kinda place...as are most creeks.
  22. Maybe a child's plastic sled? Or pick it up, or drag it.

    I Made Pastrami

That looks great...did some deer pastrami years ago...it was very good. So was your BBQ sauce. I'm sure that goose would be great...Hard to turn down Mallard & Teal bresticles & legs...its great if done right. Rare...broiled, grilled, or pan fried with some fat.
  24. That is a great spot..attracts a ton of nice fish.
  25. Any fly with peacock herl and brown hackle gets bit....rainbows are suckers for peacock & brown. Browns will eat it too..
