  1. Different age. People would write letters even in the absence of mail service. They wanted their families to know, & hoped for delivery.
  2. Lights at night is a market hunting technique for any fish, fowl, or 4 legged game animals, but it is still only legal to use a lights at night for fish.Illegal for beasts or fowl. Time for a change! To much pressure & petroleum.
  3. I'm sure that Lewis....had the extra whiskey. Depressive alky, by all accounts. Committed suicide.
  4. Season, bread, and fry a bunch of assorted fresh fish and you will have a hard time telling what is what, other than texture....After 12 beers...NO CHANCE! Once the fish fry is planned...Its gonna happen, and it wont be frozen catfish from Sam's or Walmart. Have seen several boats work to spook the fish to a confined area, jab away, then do it again. It spotlighting/market hunting for fish.
  5. They were soldier, scientists, and did their duty.
  6. I don’t discount anything that Lewis & Clark did. I have read the journals. The Corps of Discovery was a group of 2 Officers, several Sergeants, about 30 privates, Lewis’s slave York, Sacajawea, and various privateers. I’m amazed that any of them made it back!
  7. Was thinking my 18 with the TM if I go there again this year. Will get a marsh foot for my 12’ canoe pole that will work if the TM fails. Easier than a hump & drag! Thanks for the tips!
  8. I’ve seen them gig trout down there before. The kept the trout/bass separate in a red stream team bag on the front deck. Assume there was a big rock in the bag just in case. Mid 1990’s, I’m sure the tradition continues.
  9. And some little gizmo can drift in the current until it comes to rest in slow water. She cant draw any conclusion IMO...Giggers, will clean on site for the fish fry. I kill and and bleed most fish immediately if I decide to keep them...Gutted and cleaned within an hour mostly.
  10. We killed three ducks but only recovered two. We just didn't know the territory and we needed a better way to haul our stuff in...Sleds alone were not the way to go.
  11. Didn’t kill much but learned what not to do and a bit about the area. The guys I went with knew little about the area so we set up in the wrong spot in the dark (too eager), to close to the trucks, and didn’t pick up and move. Darn those pools are huge! Will bring a canoe or the jon next time. Would make things allot easier. We all had fun though. Lessons learned!
  12. Very nice!
  13. Good luck to all. Be safe!
  14. The boys are jazzed for Shanks on Sunday. Pilot friend says it’s real. Say the are hunting 24 spots, poor line for 12 but doubtful no show reservations with these numbers. Daylight savings might free a few spots. Good luck gentlemen! Be safe, and be kind to others!
  15. Urban trout fly rod tourney on Jefferson Lake in Forest Park Nov 10th. Think a cold 40oz, bragging rights, and your name burned on to the trophy is your only reward. Big Fish Bade (Roofing) trophy. Call Craig at Hargrove’s for details. Only a couple hours.
  16. Just gotta go all in and see if we kill on Sunday...Have 2 slots available at Swan Lake on 11/13...Club invite in IL on 12/5...Possible that I might kill a duck this year.
  17. It’s running 476 ccs at Sullivan, s/b fishable. Not a fan of the place after gigging season opens. Lots of locals jet boat, bow hunt deer, and gig down there. A little low to run a jet there, but they will. I’d spend my time someplace else this time of year.
  18. Solid fishing!
  19. I think that Shanks had birds yesterday, it was just impossible to see them in all the standing millet. IA has snow on the ground and more in tomorrows forecast. They are calling for rain in NE MO...It might be great! Yesterday's counts were posted this AM. 10-28-19 Waterfowl Counts
  20. The more small tourneys they fish the better they get? Think they have an aquarium. Done before...and for little money.
  21. Have a customer in “Vi Anna”, and my mother in law and aunt like to “warsh” things. Dialects are funny to a point.
  22. Hunting Shanks Sunday. Scheduled a meeting in Moscow Mills and Troy this Am. Drove through Shanks midday but did not see a single duck or goose. Some plume birds. No cover out there at all, gotta toss more grass on my A-frame. Think 80% of the corn fields are still standing. Sheet Water and Standing crops everywhere between STC and Hannibal.
  23. Nothing flying around hear. This front should move some. Heard some specks & snows moving through a couple weeks ago. Numbers are doubling every time Forbes surveys the Mississippi, but not near peak yet.
  24. Have fillet knife, will travel. You have my number.
