    What's Cooking?

Wild game, fancy cheeses, and a single brand blind single malt scotch tasting tonight. The scotch was good and the convo was better. Great time at J's house warming party.
  2. Can camp on the flat spot above the gravel lot at Baptist too. Just hike back 50' to comply with park rules. Would not stay more than a night due to walk ins but should work fine to meet folks coming in late Friday and for more in the AM. If a flush toilet is a must...Montauk or Pinecrest.

I like BarS dogs for pond catfish bait. Work better than all beef for some reason. Never have tried their other meats. Like Frick's stuff out of Washington but prefer G&W when I can make it by.
  4. Hey Chief, I've booked more than a few fishing speakers over the years. Here is how the process rolls. Thinking their is nothing special about Neosho bass, but MSA needed a speaker, someone had a question about Neosho bass. A contact was made and he bit. Guessing gas money feed & water while in town and an ad in the newsletter. Raffle trip offered and accepted. Club needs a speaker, speaker wants clients, members need trips....that's how that rolls. They are having a speaker they have not seen before and that is the only significance that it has. Might be good, might suck.
  5. Bug spray or a tent...Bugs aren't usually bad if you camp on a gravel bar but it can get ugly if your back in the woods.
  6. Ditch the tent if you can. Will leave it in the truck if above freezing and no rain or snow in the forecast. . A tarp, full length Thermarest, and a good bag is all you need. Dry clothes before bed, hat, and an empty plastic jug for when nature calls needed when below freezing.

    What's Cooking?

Thanks for the pimento cheese recipe. Work 6 days a week this time of year so not much cooking. Nice dinner out tonight. My 6 yr old had her first piano recital this evening and it was near the shop. Met Mama, Granny, and the little ones at a hole in the wall Mexican place that I've been meaning to try. Taqueria Durango on Page, a couple blocks east of Lindbergh in Overland. The food was authentic, well prepared, and very reasonable. Your choice of meat on anything and at least a dozen choices including tongue. Went with pollo & al pastor for the first visit, but looking forward to trying some more adventurous fare. Very good...reminds me of the food I used to get in So Cal, AZ, and TX.
  8. We did not notice one...but will keep an eye out for it on future trips.

    What's Cooking?

Have not made pimento cheese in a year or two will have to dig out my recipe and make some. Good party dish. Would not have thought to grill it. Thanks Chief! Gotta try that.
  10. The recent flooding moved tons of gravel, sand, and wood on the upper current but the fish are still there. Fished very well last weekend. Did not drive by any of the wild creeks but I'm sure those fish are still there too. Should have enough water for a good spawn and that is the usual limiting factor. Hope they do well.
  11. It's a god fly for rainbow trout. They seem to like that color combo, but don't think it imitates anything. Like the Pats a lot better, always works were stone flies and/or crawfish are abundant.
  12. Glad they are leaving. Have been a KC Chiefs fan for 24 hours and they are already in the playoffs. The Rams never were our team. Had some great seats for the good years but glad I got rid of them 7-8 years ago. Was a chore to find butts to fill the seats and the folks next door wanted them. Done deal. Wish them well in LA. Can't do worse than they have done in the last 10yrs.
  13. Usual suspects were there except Senior resigned this year. He started the trip in 1979 and he thinks he is getting to old. Maybe he is. You have never met the guy with the aluminum boat. Simms makes some great stuff...Its usually a toss up between Simms and Patagonia when it comes to rainwear or a set of waders.

Pan fry or grill duck over very high heat. Maybe 2-3 minutes a side.If overdone (not rare) toss them in the fridge for chili meat and dine out.
  15. 4 days fishing 2 travel? Would drive to the Current first. Fish that. Eleven Point next, contact Brian Sloss at Eleven Point Canoe. The Eleven Point trout water is abought 1.5hrs South on 19 from the Current. NFOW is an hour or so west of the Eleven Point. Would stay at Sunburst Ranch and ask Justin or Amy to set you up with a guide on the NFOW. Would float all if your budget allows.Maybe hit Crane,on the way back to Oky.
  16. Winter Float Trip...4 days every January.

    What's Cooking?

To much good food on a gravel bar this weekend. Burgers to order, tortellini and Italian sausage soup, eggs to order, ham& bean soup with corn bread. Shared dinner responsibilities with a buddy on Saturday, tenderized some pre-smoked brisket (did in November and vac packed some points and flats) over the top of the wall tent stove for a couple hours and did a pot of beans. Buddy did the tater salad. 12 for dinner 15 lbs of meat. Maybe 2 lbs left. Was a hit.
  18. A good shell on top of multiple base layers is always good. Hat + neck gator is good. Slept in a tent in 10 degree weather Saturday night. Was toasty warm, with a few minor moments of cold while getting layered up or changing wet gloves for dry.
  19. North Fork Composites makes some really nice short bass blanks. Wrapped one of the 5'6" models, and it works great for roll casting wtd plugs under overhangs and into tight spots.
  20. Thanks for the info J-Doc...Will look up your Captain up next time we visit. We usually stay at the Lahaina when we visit Ft. Myers Beach. There is a fly shop on Sanibel, but I've never used their services. I have booked a couple fly fishing trips down in the 10,000 islands out of Naples. Captain Tom Shadley @ Mangrove Outfitters. Its 45 minutes south but well worth it. Usually dock light in the early AM, then chase tarpon, snook, when the tide starts moving. Make sure you stop by the International Market in Naples to stock up on provisions.Last visit we scored on whole red snapper for $3.99 a pound. Good luck!
  21. The probability is a approximately 1 in 175,000,000 but it would be a nice problem to have.
  22. If you are in the St. Louis Area, look up the fly fishing programs offered by St. Louis County Parks. Ozark Fly Fishers does quite a few evening intro to fly fishing and tying courses and they should be starting soon. Other clubs might offer similar programs. Good luck.
  23. Depends on where you go...On the NFoW or 11pt. I'm usually fishing a #4 pats rubberlegs and a smaller nymph in the 12-14 range. Same flies will work on the Current too, but I go with big dries in the 6-8 range and some in the 12-28 range, and nymphs in the 12-18 range most of the time. If I fished tailwaters and trout parks, smaller flies would be the norm. Rainbows will eat little 2" long wolly buggers, but brown trout seem to like stuff in the 3.5-5" range. .
  24. Turned a few into Judas fish! Lol. Probably better than fancy electronics.
  25. Glad you are Ok!
