  1. I have read/heard/seen a tip of using garlic flavored Pam cooking spray or equivalent for spraying the scent on artificial baits. The idea is that it costs much less and produces the same results. Just passing it along. I used to try BaitMate, but I never noticed any benefit. It leaked in my tacklebox, (my fault), and so then I just quit trying.
  2. I guess we learn something new everyday. :-) That wood be a good theory Outside Bend. Bird Watcher, I am familiar with the thawing process of ruptured cells, my main complaint with frozen vegtables. Ndietiker, That really is a shame that you lost so much of the weight due to the offices being closed.
  3. What I tend to believe is that items when frozen will weigh the same as when they were not frozen. Meaning, if you were to weigh 5 oz of water and freeze the 5 oz of water, then weigh it as ice, it will still be 5 oz. The physical diminsions will be larger, and less dense (more bouyant), but the weight will not change. I could see losing weight if it was left in the sun, and dried out, but to be frozen, I don't believe it would lose weight. If we were talking about Dry Ice, then maybe the difference in weight would work against my statement, but we are not. I believe that there may have been a variation in the accuracy of the scales that were used. Congrats anyhow, now you have a record to re-gain, not many people have that opportunity.
  4. That is neat. What does SOF stand for?
  5. I recomend the Titanic Museum, and if it is still there, Ripleys Believe it or Not. I would tell you to do one or the other, as they both take a few hours to go through thoroughly, and can be mentally exausting :-). I wanted to check out the wax museum, but did not have time. Silver dollar city has alot to see and enjoy. I like the info given by the locals on the board, they would know best.
  6. Many interesting points have been brought up, and as was stated in the original post I am no biologist. I have read many good arguements for the initial ban. I have learned quite a bit from the responses and I still feel there may be a solution, although it may not be cheap. The reason I said the ban may be an attempt to hurt small business is a broad one. But to try to give one possible situation, we all know the little guys are generally more expensive than the megastores. The megastores generally are a few more miles from most of us and we would not go to them in order to get some live bait if we plan to fish close to the house, or in the other direction. I may go to my local tackle dealer for worms/minnows/crawdads/crikets etc, and while I'm there stock up on some hooks/sinkers etc. Now, if I did not need live bait, I would not have went to my local. So, take away the live bait, and I may not go to the small guy unless I needed hooks right now. Mega stores know this and if they can control the way we shop, they can shut down small business and then we have no option. Al, Catfisherman use crawfish, usually they just use the tails, by doing so, the crawfish is not a threat in this situation.
  7. I read that data on the sales, and I asked the gentleman about that, he explained to me, that of all of the certified dealers, MDC only surveyed approx 15%, and of the ones who answered, he believes they probably sandbagged the amount they claimed to have sold. The reason they may have sandbagged is that they may not have wanted to give away their trade secrets. Anyhow, I am not trying to start another debate, that was not the reason of my initial post. ( I guess I should have kept my ideas out of it, hind sight is always 20/20) I just wanted to inform everyone that there is a petition available for those interested.
  8. Hi all, I want to let you know that there is a petition to allow the sale of live crawdads available at Paul's Bait and Tackle in St Louis. I stopped in there yesterday to look around and get a couple of items. I was talking to one of the owners and he was explaining the reasoning for the petition and I really feel more needs to be explained as to why this ban was put in place. I am no biologist, nor have I done full studies, but the ban has been suspended, so just for that reason alone, I believe that it was a knee jerk reaction to ban the sale/use. I am a small business owner myself, and I feel maybe this ban may be an attempt from a large corp to try to slow down the need to go to the local shops. Maybe I am wrong, but as was debated a few months ago, there are other things that can be threatening the other craw fish. One interesting point that was brought up in conversation with the owner was that you can purchase live crawfish and have them shipped to your doorstep. I am no biologist and I would not be able to tell you what crawfish would possibly pose a threat and which ones would not. If you get a bad shipment, you have the local live bait and tackle dealers who deal in the sales on a daily basis who would be better qualified to identify the wrong ones. BTW, I understand the ban also addresses the transportation of crawfish from one location to another. Just a thought and wanted to let those who oppose the ban have a chance to voice thier opinion also. For those for the ban, you can go into the shop also, I'm sure they will be happy to talk to you as well.
  9. Nice report, thank you. I like your method of getting back into fly fishing. I am still new to it, I have caught 1 small bass on it, but nothing else yet. I am getting better, but it only gets used a couple of times a year.
  10. I like them.
  11. I agree with you Wayne on the fight. I have never understood why more people don't go for them just for the fight. Oh well, more for us to enjoy. I have read some interesting ways to cook carp on this and other sites, may be something I'll try this summer. Carpe Carp. :-)
  12. HOLY COW F&F, 4lb and ultralight combo? LMAO!!! you the man!. I have caught many carp on 10lb test in local ponds and some have broken 10/12 lb line with a very generous drag set. I have not broken any rods, but was worried more than a couple times. A good bait on spincast is canned corn dipped in imitation vanilla (the cheapest you can get), do not lay you poles down unattended, DO NOT LAY YOUR POLES DOWN UNATTENDED. they will disapear.
  13. No, your not going crazy. I believe you may be referencing some posts by Ron Kruger. He left the site and requested his posts be removed. We lost some good info.
  14. Nice stretch, I plan on doing it this year myself. I have parked at a couple of the accesses, and contemplated how to do it, Troll up and drift back, have the wife drop on vehicle off and float to it, and so on. Glad to hear that you were able to do it and have a good time. That is what its about, although we are supposed to be getting the good ones in there.....
  15. Good video, I have used this technique with salt, but never with the crab boil. I enjoy alot of Zatarains' items, and will give it a shot.
  16. That is really neat. The kids really do appreciate it, whether they tell you now or in 30 years. To all of those who make these things happen, THANK YOU. From a former 'kid'.
  17. Welcome unc. How is Cuba, been a while since I've been out that way.
  18. One is not dead until they are fogotten. Seeing as to how you feel about your dogs that have moved on, They are still alive and well. :-)
  19. Good luck to ya. I hope the best. Thank you for the report. Meramec State Park is an amazing park, not a bad place to finish an early season. Glad you had good fishing.
  20. F&F, how deep should one take your question? I consider them both Art to some extent. Some may ask how, I answer by asking "Who is holding the fish? Why are they not shown? " In these questions the idea of both of the pictures being art can be realized. The first one has been altered, but (not haveing a knowledge of photoshop's workings) I don't know to what extent. How would you present this picture? Would you let someone else's interpretation be the ruling factor? ( Please don't read these as me being a smartellic, it is meant is casual conversation tone)
  21. Art is created. Al, I feel that you have hit all of the details and the answer lies within expectations. Whether it is "Fine Art" or not so fine, done with water colors, pencils, photos, clay ect, it is created by controling the variables. What should be allowed and what should not, will be decided by the one creating the 'art'. As viewers, we can decide whether we like or dislike the art, but we cannot change what has been done, unless we become the 'artist'. Photoshop is a tool as has been mentioned and so is a camera. If we declare Photoshop evil, then anything that is not exactly natural to the reproduction created should also be declared evil. What I mean is, Al, if you were to use a canvas and paint while painting a fish, everything you put on that canvas would have to come from the fish and exact surroundings as you seen at the moment you are painting. If you put in a log that was not behind the fish at the exact moment you seen the fish you are altering the painting. Or as was mentioned a fish can be altered by the camera by holding it at arms length and holding the camera at an angle. Should all photos be taken from a tripod with a 110 camera? Also how about lenses used on cameras to change the image that comes out. Fish eye lenses, or tinted lenses to change the colors or certain items (all of you photographers know what I'm trying to get at), are these things out of bounds? I don't believe they should be. I enjoy seeing what can be produced by altering some things. I have tried my hand but I don't have the skills. If I buy a picture that has been altered (most for sale have been one way or another), and I can not tell that it has been, so be it. I do not buy "art" for investment, so I pay what it is worth to me.
  22. As with all of the classic videos you have posted, this is a gem.
