  1. Come on guys, its things like that, that get the PETA types in an uproar. That is "Cruel and Unusual" in my book. Remember what you were taught in ethics in Hunters Ed. Quick Clean Kill. The thumbtacks can be stepped on by many animals and shed by the coyotes that originally picked them up, and then your own pets may step on them. Not trying to ruin anyone's day, but somethings (if practiced) should not be public.
  2. I guess the quote "Ratings are for people who dont understand safe boating speeds and conditions" probably applies to someone like myself. I was raised in the concrete jungle, the only swimming we did growing up was at the local pool. The ponds we fished in as kids were 3 feet deep at the most, and stocked on a regular basis, and did not allow any type of watercraft. I have ventured out, but mostly fished from the banks of other areas and I have been to the Mississippi River on many trips, Just did not have access to a boat. I carried all of my tackle and rods on my bicycle. Now I have a boat and a couple of kids and I am trying to be the parent that teaches the children safety over all else. I realize that many factors come in to the CG tag and I figured it is rated low, for extra security. I will be powering with a 32lb thrust trolling motor, mostly on slow creeks and slow rivers. I just don't want to become a statistic. Thank you guys for the replys, it does give me a basis, and I guess like everything else in fishing, it will be a trial and error learning experience.
  3. This is probably a dumb question, but anyway, here goes. I have a 1988 10' little jon. On the coast guard tag it states max weight 350 lbs gear and persons. It is approx 36 inches wide and 10 foot from bow to stern. My question is why do canoes hold 600lbs plus when they do not have such wide floors? It makes sense to me that if you are wider/deeper you should be able to displace more. I feel if you can displace more, then you should be able to hold more weight. Now physics may come into play and I am sure I am missing something in this equation. I am just wondering and maybe someone here can explain this in laymens terms. Thanks in advance.
  4. Congrats! Sounds like it will be a neat job.
  5. "like", giving credit where credit is due.
  6. Man, and I was afraid to go into the forest because I was afraid of Bigfoot..... Seems like I maybe a loony.....
  7. In this case, I must be a large multi corporation. I repair my own cars (mechanic), I repair problems with my sink/toilet/shower (plumber), I have fixed carpet issues (floor layer), I painted the inside of my house (painter), I help my children with homework (teacher), I plugged in all of my appliances (electrician), my wife and I car pool (chauffer), ect. Man! I would go under if I had to pay taxes on all of these 'businesses' that I run. :-) OK, this article is about "building". I have built birdhouses for my sons, along with pinewood derby cars. Uh' Oh' .....don't tell the govt.....
  8. I knew in Colorado there were wild horse herds, but I was not aware of them in MO. That is interesting to know. I would sure be upset if I hit one on the road.... Wild and free....
  9. Just to let you in on a St Louis thing, Hoosier around here means white trash. I am familiar with Indiana's pride of being a hoosier, but most around here would not. Welcome from a fellow Hoosier : St Louis Native. :-)
  10. I am under the impression that if you were to fish for trout, you need a tag. Wether you keep or release, you are required to have a tag. If you are not fishing for them directly and happen upon one, and do not posses a tag, you must release immediately. If fishing in a park which a daily trout permit is purchased, a tag is not required as long as fishing in the area dictated by the daily permit. Just the way that I understand and have interpreted from various resources. I would hate to see someone fined for not having a tag.
  11. What!?, no magic silver bullet? LOL Your exactly right. Catfishing is my favorite fishing. I like to let it sit and wait them out. While I wait, thats when I play for bass and such.
  12. I really like Greasy B's list. Myself... Just to get out as much as I can with the kids. Simple.
  13. You did the hardest part in "starting". Keep it up, it will be a fun project. On the 1/2 inch deal, there are many options, just use your imagination. I think the butt joint with an additional 1/2 in of ply would perform just as well as if it was never short. ( I'm no boat builder, or a carpenter for that matter, but I play one on OAF :-) . PS thanks for the info on World Panel. I will look them up when I'm ready to do it right.
  14. sounds neat, a little out of my area, and I have to work. Keep it up, take the kids, show them why they don't litter firsthand.
  15. It is clouding up now around here, Maybe it has merit. Very neat thing to see anyhow.
  16. http://www.snowmobilecolorado.com/snow.htm This is the outfitter we used. Both years that we went, we had amazing tour guides. The lodge was really neat, and they had private trails that led into the National Forest. We got to look down on South Park, CO, that was really neat as I was really into the cartoon at the time. I can't believe that I couldnt remember the name. I do recomend this company. The name is "Good Times", and I must say they lived up to it.
  17. I have went twice, trying to remember the name of the outfit we used. It went all of the way up to the continental divide. It was really neat. They offered snomobile, dogleds, and other snow type excursions. I will try to remeber the name of the outfitters, but I do recomend trying it. The 'sleds' had heaters on the handles to keep your hands warm along with the leg area.
  18. I live about 30 miles south of St Louis, last nigt around 10:00, I looked at the moon. There was a very large halo around it. The moon was perfectly centered, there were no clouds blocking the sight, just a really neat looking halo. It is very hard to judge how large it was, but it was not just a few inches in perspective, it was a few feet. Armed with my cell phone, I took a picture. Although I know enogh that the moon is not easily photographed without the proper equipment, I still tried. (did't work well) Neat photos of the planes' chem trails, or what ever you may call them. I would imagine the noise was offsetting also.
  19. What is wrong with the law that states you can kill any animal if it is a direct threat (paraphrasing)? That is all that we need. There is really no reason I can see to kill an animal that has no nutritional value, nor usefull value by being dead. (pardon the wording, I am trying to say I understand pelt trapping, the pelts are able to be used for more than bragging rights.) I really don't believe we need new laws, lets try enforcing the ones we currently have. I really don't see where political party has much to do with this. ( I don't claim any party myself )
  20. That is AMAZING! Very nice work. You have a gift and are using it for the right cause. Keep it up and you will continue to be rewarded.
  21. Do you mind disclosing your source for the "reasonable" okoume? I have been trying to debate making a quick and dirty canoe just to play on the creeks in my area, I am still leaning on using 1/4 ply and a ton of water seal. (along with plenty of foam)
  22. Quite a few years ago you could not convince me that I did not see a Mountain Lion/Cougar/Puma in St Francois State Park. It was in the late morning/early afternoon. I was hiking a trail not too awfully far from the camp sites. I had my son, nephew and neice all under 10. We were making lots of noise and on a very well travelled trail. I was looking for anything I could point out to the kids and as I glanced here and there, I seen a large cat. No spots just a beautiful tan coat and perked ears. Now, first thing that flashed in my mind was fear/defense. I quickly looked for an out, and a large solid stick. Surveyed where the kids were, and were camp was as I estimated where we could go. Just as I seen what I thought would be the planed retreat, I looked back toward the cat, and it was not there. No noise, no obviously disturbed area where it was standing, just gone. The trees were small but tall, and I am not sure that they would have held the large cat. I don't know where it went, or how quickly it could have left. I never reported it formally, and now wonder if it was a mirage, a bobcat, or what. Just my own account of an experience I have had. P.S. We did not see anymore wildlife on that hike. We did continue and ending up off of the trail we started on and on a larger loop. But the kids still enjoy hiking.
  23. WOW!! Thanks for the topic request. I will have to favorite/follow this one for future reference. I am always willing to learn the basics, over and over again. Seems that that is always what works. Keep up the good info guys. The weather's gettin warmer, wont be long, 'till summer comes back again....
  24. I think you may be on to something. I fully agree with the thoughts you have presented. I don't get to fish much right now, but I will definitely talk around to others and see if anyone else has experienced these types of thoughts.
