I spread everything out and give all the components a blast with carb cleaner. Just don't get it on any painted surfaces. WD-40 probably won't dissolve and displace the old dirty grease and oil nearly as well.

Just FYI......That "Hot Sauce" Teflon based oil, that everyone says is the greatest thing ever, will keep the gears from retaining grease. It's known otherwise as Slick-50. Probably the worst thing you can do to brass gears, unless you can keep them immersed in it.... which you can't.

Silicote reel lube (grease for the gears) , and 2-stroke engine oil on every other moving part.

Merc 90 Command thrust 4S (heavier gearcase/larger prop) $10,786.00 Plus whatever prop is needed....of course. Earliest date we can have it is the last week of August 🙄 (rediculous.... but there you have it).
