Oh it shouldn't be "toast" if you shut it off as soon as the horn went off. But the friction from starving the water pump of sufficient water will damage the impeller. But still, I wouldn't freely offer up the information that it overheated while you were running it on a hose. Just for your own sake. Although anyone trained in deciphering the ECM data is going to see that it was started, and then immediately began to overheat at idle speed. Gonna be pretty obvious that you did something that was specifically "not recommended". They'll make a note of that and it can effect any future warranty claims.

Yeah, Ouch! Had it been a 2-stroke.....No biggie. Let her cool off and you'll never know. But a 4-stroke has a number of little plastic do-dads (valve guides, valve seats, ect.) inside the powerhead that don't react well to getting hot. Get her hot ONCE and it'll never run the same again. Those parts are plastic because y'all want QUIET motors. They'd sound like a diesel if it was all hard metal. It would sound like a vibrating tin can with 20 penny's in it. They would probably run forever....but nobody would buy a motor that sounded like that when it was running. Is all of my 4-stroke ranting beginning to make any sense yet? 🙄

If it has the additional water pick-up vent on the nose cone then you can cover that vent with a piece of duct tape and run the engine on muffs. But....if you ran it (without it covered) until the warning horn went off, then you're gonna need to replace the water pump, pronto. If I understand correctly, you said the boat was in the water for 20 days (?) . If so, then electrolysis from a badly wired (improperly grounded) dock could have caused the paint blistering. FYI:. That overheat is going to store a code on the ECM.....So congratulations, your warranty is null and void. 😂

Firstly "torque specs" are useless when reusing any type of gasket. You can FEEL the gasket compress and seat, and the threads begin to stretch. At that point it is tight enough. You should never be able to just reach down with one hand and a screwdriver...and remove a gearcase plug. This is the recommended lube for all Johnson/Evinrude gearcase's (except for the old electric shift motors) It's yellow, easy to read, and has properties that keep things well lubricated and rust-free even when partially contaminated with water. The dark blue Merc lube turns to frothy light-blue foam when contaminated with water. And when Mercury warranty inspectors see light-blue frothy foam in a gearcase then any potential warranty claim is DENIED.......Cuz that's the way Mercury Marine plays the game.

As long as the lube level is full, the drain and vent plugs are tight, and the gaskets and seals are doing their job......then you're fine. I'm just overly critical of marine service. The same way you'd hope that Aviation mechanics are. Breaking down out in the middle of a lake or river not only sucks and can ruin your day, depending on the conditions it can be dangerous as hell and end your life. Kinda like it did that Dad and 2 highschool kids last year in Tennessee.

All of the strip pits (9 of them) that I grew up fishing all had those signs too. It releases the owner of the property from liability if you get hurt or drown there. We fished them heavily for 20 years and nobody ever got run off or cited for trespassing. Just something to ponder. 😁

#1. Goof:. He removed the vent screw before the drain screw. Doing that doesn't allow you to inspect the first thing that comes oozing out of the bottom of the gearcase. Instead it just comes squirting out all at once and you can't tell what has settled in the bottom. #2 Goof:. Using that thin blue Mercury lube in an Evinrude is a no-no. It won't hurt the gears but Evinrude's have different shift shaft seals that require different lube...or else they will fail prematurely. You can use Evinrude lube in a Merc, but not Merc lube in an Evinrude. #3 Goof:. It's best to replace the drain screw gaskets, but if you don't at least tighten them up better than he did. Evinrude's have the hex key drain screws for a reason...so you can put a wrench on it and crank that sucker down tight enough to compress the stiff nylon gasket and stay put. He just snugged it up half-assed like you would the lid on a tube of toothpaste. That ain't worth a crap!!!

2015 Mercury 9.9 four stroke

See the little 2 screw cover on the side of the exhaust housing? Remove it and inspect the orientation of the upper & lower shift rods in the brass retainer clamp. Twenty bucks says that at one time someone replaced a water pump impeller and didn't reassemble it correctly. Shift problem fixed! 😊 -

Yeah you don't want a long shaft motor on a short transom boat. It will roll the boat hard to either side when turning. You won't be able to operate in as shallow of water. And the exhaust relief ports may not stay above the waterline during hole shots. -

2015 Mercury 9.9 four stroke

From what I can tell they run for about 7-8 years and then develop valve leakage issues that cause hard cold starting, unstable idle, and poor acceleration. And that can't be repaired for a reasonable amount......unless you want to do it yourself. But of course by then you'll get the typical "NLA" (No Longer Available) parts message from Mercury marine. A couple of years of use for 1000.00 isn't too bad though. So if you like it, buy it. 👍 I've said it 1000 times, and I'll say it again..... I've yet to see a 4-stroke powerhead last longer than its original set of spark plugs. So there's that. 🙄 -
Makes me wanna eat Paris Hilton. 😋

Are you gonna tell us what engine it is, or not? Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Toyota, Nissan? If it is a fuel injected engine then you can rule out "flooding". When running is the Check Engine light on? Are you looking for help/ideas.....or do you just want someone to listen to ya whine about it ? Everytime my truck acts up I can find 10-14 YouTube videos about it.

Reach down there and find out, Buttercup. No need for lotion, I'm sure your hands are plenty soft enough. 😂

Orion's nickname is "Roo", that's what he is called, and answers to, by everyone in our circle of family and friends. Roo is short for "Roop"..... which was a word the old bird hunters where I grew up used to describe "A hunting dog that doesn't hunt", and basically doesn't know the difference between a bird and a cheeseburger. I grew up assuming that everyone that hunted knew what a "Roop" was. But I get asked all the time why the hell we call Orion "Roo". So there ya have it.... Some original Audrain/Monroe/Montgomery county vernacular for ya. 😅

If it's a Vortec Chevy I can tell you how to fix it. If it's anything else....your guess is as good as mine.

There's some really REALLY cool hunting and fishing video games nowadays. Many of them download for free, and you actually have to know some things about hunting/fishing to do very well with them. You should check them out. The only downside to the free downloads is that you will have to put up with a few ads. I know that if I was injured or couldn't get out.... I'd be all over them. Their pretty cool !

Been awhile, but I think @Flysmallie was there to witness these two. He may have even taken the pics. A pair of same-day wintertime Highbank hole studs. 👍 -

Remember it like it was yesterday. I hadn't slept, or eaten a decent meal in 4 days. Anybody else with a near 8 pounder in their hands would have been smiling ear to ear. Ya just don't realize it until you look back. I was sick, dude. 😞
