I've tried both the strap-on kind when wading, and the stand-alone type in the boat. I find them to be JUST ANOTHER THING to get in the way. On the rare occasion that the line comes zipping out without tangling, I don't notice that it helps me shoot any further than if the line is in a pile at my feet.

Look into the "Bulkhead Deceiver". Same general concept, quick and easy to tie, the messier the better. Sub-walks like a dream. Be sure to use a heavy saltwater hook. Yesterday there was a game warden running up and down the road....then he pulled in here. Turned out my neighbor called in a deer, or did his check-in via internet, and he was verifying the "details". 🙄 I really wanted to ask him why they seem to ignore all wildlife regs all year long.... but as soon as it comes to stupid freakin' DEER they turn into Nazi Regulators? But I was so happy that he hadn't chosen ME to harrass....I just kept my mouth shut.
