  1. I know smart, responsible gun owners who enjoy hunting, or are employed in a position that self defense is potentially needed. I also know alot of dumb folks with guns. The NRA has done a total disservice to responsible gun owners by treating these two groups equally. Even worse is the NRA's completely tone deaf response to every mass shooting, especially this one. There was a time in this state that to have a concealed weapons permit, a person had to write and personally be ok'd by the county sheriff. That restriction was removed roughly ten years ago now. Those changes haven't improved our or our children's safety one whit.
  2. That's my deal too. Still buy season AR fish and trout permits as well as TX since I visit them enough to justify.
  3. Everything is better here.
  4. Let perfect no longer be the enemy of better. Any progress is still better, any small step. I pray we as a nation can do better.
  5. There is no way you would stand outside and let that go on for another ten minutes if you were able to give it a try regardless of personal danger.

Dark kolsch. That would be my kind of beer!
  7. Back when I used to set throw lines, we had a big blue - guess maybe 90 lbs. - take a bait and proceed to get tangled in the main line. Too far gone to release so we cleaned it. Have had flatheads there several over thirty, a couple maybe forty. All within ten miles of Jefferson City.
  8. I have caught small sturgeon on the lower Osage when I lived in Jeff City and fished that river a lot. Also eels, herring, suckers and other not so usual ones. Have had some really good wiper days below the lock. It's a cool river to fish. Some of the tribs are great smallmouth, goggle eye and bluegill spots. Too bad you lost that nice sturgeon. But take heart, it wouldn't have counted anyway since you didn't hook it in the first place.
  9. What's the point of having armed school security if they're not expected to do what they can to stop someone from shooting students for ten minutes or so? Better to put up a sign that says pretty please don't hurt anyone on campus and save the money. Sorry. Cannot accept inaction on anyone's part who has a chance to stop something like this from continuing - regardless of personal danger.
  10. We had 7.11 inches in Ozark. No wonder the Finley is big!
  11. Finley is big. Over the road at the park in Ozark. And that was before more big rain this afternoon.

    What's Cooking?

The fish stock. Head of a 75 lb. amberjack, five medium onions halved. Four bunches of garlic broken into whole cloves. A full bunch of celery. A full bunch of parsley. A pound of whole carrots. Some salt. Some multicolored whole peppercorns. Some bay leaves. Some whole allspice. Some Spanish style paprika. Two whole dried red chiles. All in a really big blue enamel pot simmering away up in the shop. I brought the head to a near boil set it aside and drained to rinse blood etc, then started with fresh water and all of the above. My shop smells better than it has in a long time. I'm thinking maybe four to six hours. Then cool and strain into mason jars that I'll put in the freezer.
  13. That's my recipe for coyotes too, be they two legged or four. Instead of giving teachers CC pistols, put a coach gun and a couple of spare rounds in one of those fast access gun safes scattered around schools. If you really want schools to be armed camps that is.
  14. Hunt with what you like. It's not rocket surgery.
  15. I saw a big tom strutting today for two other smaller toms. Hens aren't up for it yet, but as usual, the guys can hardly wait.
  16. What he said. Took two grandsons out with Mr. Babler last year and had a totally wonderful day start to finish.
  17. My personal favorite was the Zane Grey movie when the ocean just comes alive with bait trying to get away from what I presume to be a school of tuna. I thought it was an awesome place.
  18. Cutting my own switch was way worse than having it cut my bare butt. Never have and never will forget it or my grandmother crying while switching me. That line about it hurts me worse than it hurts you was never so true.
  19. You've got to be joking. Wondering about what's sad about a child worrying about being killed by a classmate or a stranger or whoever with a rifle. What is sad is how I feel for you right now.

I brought back some big fish bones and heads from the gulf. Going to make a batch of fish stock to use in gumbo, etc. Vichysoisse for sure in my future. Not with chicken stock though.

  22. Sorry for your loss. Dogs are family. I remember every one I've ever had and there have been a lot. The only thing that's worse than losing your dog is living without at least one. There are eight that live here if that tells you anything about how we feel about dogs.

    What's Cooking?

I've got a pot roast going right now. Browned the roast and two halved vidalias. Deglazed with a full bottle of cabernet, reduced liquid by half, added an envelope of Lipton onion soup and about a half teaspoon of ginger. Veggies also include rutabaga, a russet potato, parsnips and carrots. Saved a few of the carrot tops and they are the top layer. I am hopeful/confident.

Put a ball of breakfast sausage in the cavity, roast in a covered dish with 1/2" water. Trust me.
