  1. It appears that it is high. I don't know exactly how that would translate to those areas, but there are some tight spots when wading in normal water. USGS Niangua River Link
  2. I don't think the noise factor is that important, things that go bump in the water, go bump in the water and noise is noise. I don't like that they grab and I don't like sound they make. There's also the shape factor, they are limited by what they can press. Here's a source for Gluvit with some information, its not cheap, but neither are boats. Link= GLUVIT
  3. I agree with that a 100%. I missed not being able to camp above the spring in the primitive campground there. You bought your tag the night before and in the morning just started walking downstream.
  4. Trigger gap and Rockhouse would be your best bets. I don't wade, but I know someone who does and thats where they wade, Rockhouse being favored over trigger I believe.. As always, water level will affect any wading.
  5. I read onetime that they figured out that it was headlights from a highway in Oklahoma, they were being reflected when the clouds and humidity were just right.
  6. Yea they ripped Bennett apart. They moved the campers out of sight and built plush cabins for the more affluent at the stream. They bought Vogels so that people could have better access to the river, and then tied it up for their own canoe rental. I think the biggest disappointment for me was when they tore down the old store, it was classic and I know they could have found another use for it. I don't really think the public shared their vision of modernization, or going commercial to the excess. At least I've never met anyone who did.
  7. I think your theory is a good one.
  8. Yea, I know and I've heard them called sloughs and old rivers. Besides Momo, there's Foxfire and the mystery light down in the corner of the state, can't remember what its called.
  9. There was a lake in the park as late as the mid 50's. You could rent paddle boats on it. The west end of the dam anchor is still visible above the low water bridge at the south end of the park.
  10. Do you use those ugly black jigs?
  11. I got mine a BPS and its about 30-36" long, plastic blade, aluminum shaft. It can be used by gripping it down the shaft and bracing the handle against the forearm. It does a good job of changing the direction of the canoe or kayak.
  12. I'm not sure I agree with that. When the 'dads go to bed there isn't a whole lot of food on the bottom.
  13. There are some "natural lakes" along the Missouri river, and probably the Mississippi, that were formed when the river, in a rage, straightened itself out. All of them that I'm aware of are shallow and not really premium fisheries. There is a State Park in the northwest corner that is on one of these, can't recall the name. Most are all private. There was one on the river where I spent much of my childhood, it was in fact called the Old River and resembled a deep slow moving creek, except that it didn't flow. It was long and narrow, about 6' at the deepest and a couple of miles long. There was also another much smaller one that resembled a U in the same bottom.
  14. Ya'll realize they are looking more up than down now?
  15. As far as springs go, when the shallow aquifer gets low its harder for heavy rains to refill them. Most of them don't have vents large enough to allow the to displace air rapidly. when they are normal it doesn't take much water to refill, but when they get low it's a long slow process to catch up.
  16. How about that the Lake of the Ozarks was completed in 1931 and is a private lake! For many of us old timers it was "The Lake", because for many years it was the only substantial alke in Missouri. I don't know what the price of land was at the time, but i would imagine it was very little.
  17. I believe many of the buildings in it and Bennett were built by the CCC. The only thing left at Bennett is the bathroom and lodge, and I believe the store at RR.
  18. Or use a small, 30", paddle with one hand. The key word being "correction", not paddling.
  19. If she's like mine she feels it's an obligation. If you bring it up later she'll say it never happened, at least mine would, and that you get to do everything you want to.
  20. I saw that and if I was in Omaha I think it would be a must.
  21. My kids went out last year for Mahi mahi, I believe, and had a blast.
  22. This is true. I don't want to get foul mouthed here, but a double kayak paddle will negate some of this. Personal I don't think the Guide would be that bad, while its far from perfect when you consider the price it might well work for you. If you're looking primarily at the James and the Finley for day fishing, you'll be doing a lot more drifting than paddling. You might also shoot a Pm to Fishnwrench and Ollie on this board, they both have experience in the 147 guide. Ham, on this board, has a good friend who had/has one, but i don't know if he is a visitor here. Ham could help you.
  23. It should make it better if you know where to look. The water they like should be bigger and better.
  24. It looks like Beaver is near its capacity, but BS can hold another 20'. Winter can be worse, if we get a big snowfall and a quick thaw they could start dumping a lot of water.
