  1. Finally made it back to Lane Springs today. The last time before it closes the gates. I did well I think, I landed 10 and lost or missed at least 7. Started at around 8:00 With a P&P midge, That was the winning fly today, then switched to wet flys and continued to catch fish though I lost three of the wet flys to the nasty brushes lurking around and in the stream. I am just starting to use the wet fly and I missed a few by not letting them have it long enough. Most of them were small par, the big one went about 8 inches. It was a good day. Sorry, for the lack of pictures, I left the camera at home.
  2. Nice rod for BSC. Good looking fish and rod.
  3. White and possibly Silver or gold. I like a six weight but the five appeals to me.
  4. I did see an otter in the park gnawing on something earlier this year. I have noticed on one stream that otters have been spotted on that one pool in particular that normally held a few trout, failed me the last time I fished it.
  5. Thanks for the report mreed81. Glad you got some time off to do a little fishing. I have wondered if there had been any otters spotted on BSC recently.
  6. You could try a New Zealand indicator. They consist of a piece of rubber tube and sheep wool. They come in kit form and are easy to use and do not make a big plop when they hit the water, It does not take a lot of wool to float a small fly.
  7. I stopped at BSC on the way home from a disappointing trip to Maramec springs a couple of weeks ago and fished that same stretch of creek, I did not have the rod I usually use. I had my nine foot, Allan. I didn't catch any trout but I caught a number of minnows on a Copper John. Nine foot is a little long for BSC.
  8. Thanks, Mr. Billethead, I really enjoyed your trip report. It was almost like I had been along. Great pictures as well.
  9. Harris122, I don't get what happens at Meramec. A light bite, sore mouths or what. I did think about it a bit and I did not see numbers of trout. Probably because of the grass and the really clear water might have made them shy. who knows. I will probably not go back down there until the C&R starts back up. I will spend my time in the smaller creeks and rivers. Probably wait till it cools off some. I can't really deal with the heat and humidity like I used to.
  10. I guess I am eating crow today. Went to Maramec Springs today and lost one fish early and missed another later in the day. It seemed like no one was catching on anything. Bait , lures or flies. This was the first time I had fished the park since the end of C&R. Now I remember why. I hate All that grass and moss. Sorry Mitch F.
  11. I think that I always spooled up with 2#, I guess I believed that the farther I could cast the more fish got to admire my lure. Now I only flail the water with the fly rod. That keeps them awake.
  12. I have read every post on your travels and have enjoyed them tremendously. I do not believe that I paused to touch a single like button in my hurry to read the next post. I am liking them a lot. Your a lucky man to have found a woman that is willing to share your interest in hunting and fishing Happy Aniversary and yeah, you had better keep her. Keep the pictures and story coming.
  13. Mitch F. I believe they release more fish today than they did years ago. There are just more people fishing now so the frenzy ends faster. I get to the parks during the week and there are people everywhere.I haven't fished a park during the weekend in quite a while but I assume that they are crowded.
  14. I have read that getting permission to hunt hogs in Texas is really easy to obtain. Even seen ads where you pay a small amount and some dude who has access to the ranches having problems puts you in the right area. I don't know about cost or areas as it's not really my area of interest. Just posted for the people that might be interested.
  15. Just started fishing below the park and found, for me tough conditions. Not that the fish were not biting but the weather threw me a major curve. Because of the humidity, My glasses were fogged up so badly I could not see well enough to tie a fly on. The trout were hitting midges and I am told a mayfly. I caught fish but on large flies which meant I could not fish the flies I might have. And then it started raining. The weather predictions I saw said an 8% chance of rain. It rained for what seemed like an hour, a steady rain that left me soaked because who needs rain gear with a 8% chance of rain. Actually, I found it pretty funny. I caught some nice fish including one that went 16 or 17 inches and several in the 15 and below. If anyone has a cure for foggy eyewear I would love to hear it. I have to go back down to the Current and do not want to go thru that sightless ordeal again.
  16. According to the river gauges, the level didn't look too bad but the volume was ridiculously heavy. How was the wading? were you able to wade the river?
  17. Good day with a nice rod. And some pretty good fish to top it off.
  18. I fished inside the park and did not catch anything seems like the bite was light. Two takers but no hook ups. Outside I managed a nice brown and a really beautifully colored rainbow. Others in my group did well. Sorry, forgot to tell you what they were apparently hitting. P&P midge, SJ worm, and a Zug Bug. Other flies as well but I am not sure which.
  19. I am not so sure some of you are being fair to the property owner for charging $30.00 for access. As it was mentioned he has a lot of money tied up in his land and business and needs to pay employees and feed his family. Another way to think of it is if he did not own and allow access someone else might own it and not let anyone fish it at all. In Missouri, we have a lot of public water with a lot of access. We are lucky, but you can't have it all.
  20. Matt, I floated the Bourbeuse a bit years back and it can be feast or famine on that river. At this time of year, if you can get on it while it's up a little the fishing should be pretty good. Normal levels usually mean long slow holes and short runs. Good luck.
  21. Practically every ill of society you see in the urban areas you find on the rivers or in the parks. No one educates their children to respect others or to exercise control. I have been burned so often that I seldom venture out-side of the park areas without a group.
  22. Good to hear from you, Matt. Awesome canoe and post. You will have a blast with that canoe it opens a lot of water to you.
  23. Looking forward to the rest of your reports. that is one fat spot for his size.
  24. I have fished double bladed bus baits in the past and I am embarrassed to admit it.
  25. When the wife and I first bought our farm 25 years ago. We would hear coyotes singing every night. One evening my wife opened the door and our cat new to our family bolted out the door never to be seen again. I told my wife how she had probably been caught by the coyotes and that we didn't live in the city anymore and that she should keep an eye on our two small dogs. Came home later in the week to find a crew building a fence in the yard. I wasn't happy to have to look out the window to see chain link dominating the view but it made her happy. Several weeks went by and I noticed a very large owl hanging around the tree line. When I pointed it out to my wife she asked if it would eat her little five pound, Maltese named Squeek. I laughed and said it could, he probably tasted like rabbit. the next day she had bought about three hundred yards of trimmer line for me to string in the trees around the house to foil the owls attempts to devour her baby boy.
