  1. See, I said the boat was the handicap and both Al and 'Wrench agree. Tie that thing up to an anchor and fish. Or put the rod away go boating.
  2. I like the looks of this one I think it was McLellan that sold me on Clousers years ago and the first time or two I used them they did catch a lot of barely keepers, after that first week they worked about one time in twenty or thirty. they seem to do better with bead chain instead of bar bell eyes, but not my go to either.
  3. That's something I''ll have to try again some time, I don't recall ever taking a smb on a popper, only rarely on top for the bigger gals. I have caught some medium size large mouth on poppers, but only in frog ponds.
  4. The entire Elk drainage could be called clear and low pressure, but many of my biggest have come from near a lowwater bridge that has other anglers and swimmers on it almost daily in warm weather. Fast enough water to skate an 1/16 oz jig if you want, and right against boulders and logs or roots. the repeatably of cast is the thing, 2" from the log over and over all day long if you want. (with zero cranking in) Depth is likely not what you are used to but is the bottom, idk, maybe 12' more or less depending on hole. I would consider a boat a disadvantage, other than for transport.
  5. I think every smallmouth I ever caught over 14" has been on fly rod. And none of the 17"-19+" have been on casts over 30'. No cranking between casts seems more efficient to me, as does being able to hit the exact same cast length time after time; but I don't encourage anyone else to use flies for bass. I certainly don't encourage them to fish deep with flies. If anyone asks, there are green sunfish in that stream. The few that I believe went over 20" and one that was probably over 21" happened when I had no measure with me except my eye, so, they were just "nice fish".
  6. Yeah well Mo lets us buy and sell non-oxygenated gas at the pumps too, it just has to meet higher octane levels. The places listed here https://www.pure-gas.org/index.jsp?stateprov=MO that are near me are indeed selling various high octane non-oxygenated gas for about $.50/gal more money. Another sure source of non-oxygenated gas is any small airport, apparently prop planes don't like alcohol. And yes it is legislated state by state what can or cannot by sold within each state. There was outcry of politicians benefiting from the construction of distilleries back when the E10 mandate was first imposed and tales of politicians owning corn farms, other such stuff but the voting public stood behind the E10 laws and reelected all the pols.
  7. So they killed (actually I suspected they had killed the fish) how many fish to find 200 that are 80+ yo ? Is that poor reproduction limited to the lake/river where those ?thousnds of buffalo were captured and the buffalo in the $million harvest area is reproducing at such pace that fishing doesn't affect it? My question above is, if that is true about the harvest and has been ongoing during the 80 years of no new fish, why hasn't the harvest suffered? I understood the "new " part of the testing was the bomb radiation part, and that assumes that only at one particular time was the fish exposed to radiation. I see this as raising more question than it answers, and while to talk about verification of their findings, it appears as though they said "hey we done good" to them selves- I saw no outside reviews or verification. Granted, I just read the article and it tells nothing really, reads like a typical press release; should go to the published study itself. When time allows.
  8. So if they haven't reproduced since the 1930s, how does the $1million commercial fishery still happen? I'll wait for the other two independent studies to confirm this. Are the fish now deaf?
  9. https://www.pure-gas.org/index.jsp?stateprov=MO I've tested gas from several stations that were ethanol free. Never had one show otherwise, and it makes a difference in old carbureted trucks and tractors, imo. My two cycle stuff is new enough that they were designed for E10.

    Flooded!

Pool elevation is 754.35 feet on Tuesday 28May19 Time: 22:00 hours. Top of flood pool is 755', pool is 93.16% full. Might be the first time this full since July '07. Reservoir release is 100093 cubic feet per second on Tuesday 28May19 Time: 22:00 hours. 10.55 ft ABOVE normal Ground is still saturated here with the wet weather springs still flowing strong so any rain fall is likely to be all run off. I would guess it's the same through out the drainage area.

  12. Rotational; grazing doesn't benefit the cattle, it gives the forage a rest.
  13. Clays, butts, pockets and tracks are predictably constant, fish are always moving and reacting; and so are unpredictable, meaning at some point luck becomes a factor.
  14. Just do the first five keepers, less stress on all concerned, and more tavern time, but it'd be a little harder for the bookies because of increased element of chance. I expect that soon enough it will be digital VR fishing, thus allowing global competition.
  15. Don't those boats have hull numbers? talking about fifty shades green to guess which jerk is futile
  16. I don't like the binding constriction and loss of side vision, I hate that I cant find light jackets that don't have hoods, new jacket with the hood hacked off just looks tacky, but it's lots more wearable.
  17. If I had spent $40000 on a trip to fish there from a canoe, kayak, bank or wading, would I have more rights there? It seems to me that money, yours or his, should not enter the equation, first rod there owns that spot. Your $500 is nothing to his $100000, if the amount of money involved means anything to anyone it is obvious that everyone should just leave the lake when a tournament is scheduled; they have so much more money invested and so much money at stake. If complaints are filed with the sanctioning organization and the MDC etc. the offenders should be made to care. Fines or disqualification...
  18. I can't stand a hood and don't know how any one could, but I have no problem wearing a brimmed hat/sombrero and long sleeves. Old timers used to use neckerchiefs/silk scarves, Grandpa always buttoned his collar button out on the farm. On the wash up I find Lemon Joy to get the worm and fish off better than Dawn. I Use Dawn for shop grease and Joy for fishing. ymmv
  19. https://majorleaguefishing.com/contact-us/ Probably should also send a copy to https://mdc.mo.gov/contact-engage/contact-us
  20. Why does it matter if you are a guide? bad manners are bad manners, it would be crappy for such a jerk to pull in on anyone - kayak or guide or an opponent in the contest
  21. A few places also show pdf downloads- I don't know how that works, but if you search the title with PDF you'll get some free options? such as https://www.slideshare.net/jamawoje/free-download-pdf-knowing-bass-the-scientific-approach-to-catching-more-fish-full-pages-113978076 or http://www.paperbackswap.com/Knowing-Bass-Scientific-Keith-A-Jones/book/1585745235/ good luck
  22. worldcat.org shows that Dallas County Public Library in Buffalo, Mo. has a copy. You can probably borrow it through your local branch.
  23. But bass don't know that.
  24. Then every fish I ever caught with plugs was foul hooked? I used to know a cantankerous old fly rod man that insisted that it only counted if the the fly was in the upper lip- anything else was foul.
  25. Gigging sun fish is not poaching. Read the regs.
