My buddy and I decided at the last minute to take our 2 boys down because we heard how hot Taney is right now. Started fishing Thursday morning. We planned on drifting scuds like everyone else but didn’t do any good at all. (This was due to user error and our inability to rig them correctly). Switched over to jerkbaits and crank baits that evening and it was on. We pretty much had the trophy area to ourselves and boated fish after fish in the 16”-19” range with a couple over 20”. We didn’t take a lot of pictures because we were trying to unhook them without taking them out of the water. (3 treble hooks and nets are always a pain).
Went back out Friday morning and had a repeat performance until the sun got to high. Once that happened, they just shut off. The boat traffic then was absolutely crazy also.
Headed back out Friday evening (didn’t even bother fishing in the afternoon). Only had to share the trophy area with Phil and one other boat. We had an evening that dreams are made of. Fish after fish after fish. All of them were big, fat, and healthy. Again, we were terrible about taking pictures. The water is moving so fast we just wanted to get them unhooked and back to fishing. We had 18”-19” trout that we were begging to get off the hook at the boat so we didn’t have to mess with unhooking them. There were times that we had 2 or 3 trout swarming our jerkbaits at a time. It was crazy. Some of the fish we caught were coughing up shad so I feel the shad bite is as good as the scud bite right now. My buddy topped it all off with beautiful 26” brown and a 24” rainbow. We also had 2 that were 22”. We ended up with 7 trout over 20”.
It was an amazing trip but I think our biggest accomplishment was the fact that we had 4 of us in the boat throwing jerkbaits and didn’t have to make a trip to the ER to remove a hook. 😂
