    What's Cooking?

Lamb loin chops last night but no picture. I did take a picture of the side, a large Hasselback potato we shared.
  2. Champ says the Top Dollar throws like a potato chip. Someone else told me the action was like a Spook Jr. that had drunk too much tequila. Both traits are true. However, I have caught 63 fish in one day with it. I have caught a 23.5 inch largemouth around 8 pounds with it. And, important to you, I have several 3+ smallmouth from the lake with it. If I send you one (they are no longer made), do you promise to be patient and fish it with faith and determination?
  3. From the Eagle Rock ramp, look across to the the rocky bluff. Early in the day, 5 to 9 AM, slowly troll a fire tiger #9 Berkley FlickerMinnow with 150 feet out of 10# test line. That will put the bait at around 24 feet deep. The target is the edge of the flat where it rolls into the channel. That edge will be very close the that rock bluff. Trust me, the fish are on that edge. Bill's advice about the nightcrawler straight down will work as well. Good luck! If they are bass or small walleye, get them back in the water immediately. If you catch a legal walleye, teach your nephew how good fried fish can be. 🙂
  4. I modified six new redfins per these instructions, 5 large (both jointed and single piece) and one medium single piece. The larger models all waked, yet you could see differences among them. Thank you Champ. At the same time I tank tested the modified redfins, I tested some other wake baits. The Megabass I Jack required a very slow retrieve to stay on the surface. When retrieved slow enough it did wake, but the bait barely rolled and was very rhythmic with no variation. I also tested both a single piece and jointed Berkley Surge Shad 130. Before I tested I removed the split rings and hooks to replace them with higher quality ones. Both baits waked with almost as much roll as the modified Redfins. It will be interesting to see if they catch fish as well as the modified Redfins.

Not as lovely as it tasted. Skirt steak, roasted potatoes and mushrooms, grilled zucchini.

    What's Cooking?

Easy homemade pasta -> measure half all purpose flour and half semolina (or all semolina) into the food processor. Add salt, pepper, ground nutmeg. Give it a whirl to blend. Mix a beaten egg with olive oil and just a touch of water in a measuring cup. Pulse the processor and drizzle the egg oil mixture into the moving flour. When it looks like like wet sand stop adding liquid. Check to make sure the dough will hold together without being too wet. Won't hold together = more liquid. Too wet = add flour. Shape into a disc and rest 20 to 30 minutes before rolling. When you do roll, put the dough through the widest opening, fold it by thirds and repeat four or five times to knead. Ness, the wife and I have had the pasta attachment since we bought the mixer in the 80's. The attachment squeals but stlll works. I love it. Bolognese tip: Cook the meat, tomatoes, garlic, stock, onions, carrots, and celery in a slow cooker until the meat is falling apart. At that point, I add mascarpone or heavy cream and let it thicken.

Last night's southwestern spiced roast chicken with a bit of guacamole and a side or very fresh cumin corn.

    Whatchya Drinking?

Fear sweetened spirits such as Southern Comfort, Irish Mist, and Yukon Jack, as well as the new sweet bourbons. If you go that way, it will only end badly.

I grew nothing in this dish. Sweet and sour shrimp.

    Whatchya Drinking?

At an out of town rugby party I attended as the designated driver for the players I coached, I once witnessed something I have not seen any other time. A line of maybe 10 people, alternated male and female, played pass the jello shot, no hands allowed. Things went downhill from there.

    What's Cooking?

I love pickled green tomatoes. I need to put some up.
  15. Fun thread. Some of you may remember that I dislike spinning reels so much that I made a casting rod for my Ned fishing. With the right reel (a Revo MGX) I regularly fish 1/16th heads on the Ned. The reason I dislike the spinning reel is the inevitable line twist and the inability to make certain casts accurately and precisely. That difficult stems from two factors. First, casting with a flat arc when needed is way more difficult. Second is stopping the lures flight immediately when needed. I also find them easier to use on windy days (except into the wind) and I can use my thumb and move the rod tip to affect the direction of the cast. However, as like some comments above, I have been using them since I inherited a Shakespeare President without free spool.
  16. Interesting point. However, here is something to think about. When the uncontrolled laissez faire capitalism of the late 19th century and early 20th century created very powerful industry owners and very poor workers, the workers tried to change things. Riots occurred as owners tried to prevent union formation. Read about the Haymarket affair, the Pullman strike, and the Battle of Blair Mountain. Finally the creation of unions helped tame the extreme disparity of wealth. In the last 20 years we have seen some of that same disparity of wealth develop and business owners use political actions to control workers. The pressure is building. While I agree that some current union practices can be abusive, I expect work force pressures will force the formation of new unions or changes in the existing ones. Sorry to interrupt an interesting thread about the frequency of poor manners. I just thought I would put on my teacher face for a bit. Motoman, please rest assured the comment was meant as interesting discussion and not with ill will.

    What's Cooking?

Last night I did something new for me. I made a fettuccine with an altered Alfredo sauce. I used smoked salmon and capers. I matched that with a salad that included radicchio.

    Whatchya Drinking?

Glenfiddich is very good. However, I urge you to come to the dark side. Buy Redbreast Irish at what ever price point suits you. Pour two fingers. Drop in a single ice cube if you must. I'll wait.
  22. Started looking. Getting hard to find one. Same for the Lindy River Rocker. The most similar I found still on the market is the Luhr Jensen Kwik Fish. https://www.amazon.com/Luhr-Jensen-Kwikfish-Fishing-Blazing/dp/B009BQYE0Q/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?keywords=kwikfish+k9&qid=1561751248&s=sporting-goods&sr=1-1-fkmr0 Yakima Mag Lip https://www.amazon.com/Wordens-Lures-Mag-Lip-3-5/dp/B00C4ZO654/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_200_t_0?_encoding=UTF8&refRID=38MAB0JMQQZTR3ZYNMHK&th=1
