  1. Many times I have read that common carp grow so fast they out grow predator fish that could eat them. I do agree it perfect conditions a percentage of fish can grow exceptionally large very quickly. yet even in perfect aquaculture conditions it takes far longer than is typically believed. The linked video is a well respected carp hatchery in England that supplies quality fish to the multi billion dollar trade in the EU. fish are referred to as C1 for 1st year fish, C2 for second and so on, the fish are fed and weight about double what the fish of the same length would be here in our area waters. Genetically, they seek to get fast growth AND long life. In studies I have read on age and growth in the US is typically slower in the north and faster farther south. Certain latitudes seem to produce more trophy fish (over 20# and > 33") too far south the fish don't live long enough to reach larger sizes seen elsewhere. you will notice the UK bloodline fish have fair more "mirror" carp than what we see here. from the people I interact, with its approximately 80% of the spawned fish are mirrors. here in the ozarks one in 1000 or more. The best UK bloodlines get bigger than our fish, 80 pounds in the UK! our fish seem to be long and lean and do not have the genetic girths we see in UK bloodlines. Basically its like how our native river strain walleyes look vs northern lake strain walleyes, or how a spotted bass is heaver for its length than a smallmouth. Ageing carp can be problematic, in studies researchers have used; tagging, dorsal spines as well as otoliths for Estimating Ages. In many cases tagging has directly contradicted dorsal spines/otolith results, its particularly noticeable on fish that seem to skew the grow rates up! tagged fish gave the best data. We do have a couple of hatcheries that raise UK bloodline fish here in the USA, they raise fish and ship them back to the EU.
  2. SE kansas strip pit get a nice place for 130k
  3. this subject is interesting, some bass food is more nutritious than others, are bass chasing food and burning up more energy than they are retaining? also how many fish burn up energy getting caught over and over? how long after a bass is caught hauled around in a live well return to "normal"? Are too many tournys having a negative effect? also are stressed caught fish have a greater vulnerability to parasites? more questions than answers at this point
  4. been below truman when people tossed buffalo in the riprap to rot, stink so bad could hardly fish....seen fish dumped all along the bank and boat ramps at most of our area lakes, in a word wanton waste, eat it or toss it back as a rule, bigheads or silvers, keep all of them just dispose of them properly if you don't want to eat them
  5. big carp in the lakes?
  6. you might recognize this guy
  7. I have scoured the net and have found "0" pics of fly caught bighead or silver carp, grass carp perhaps.... commons yes......kinda like muskie fishing with crappie jigs, or catching gizzard shad on a dry fly...sure it happens but...well just saying prob just snagging
  8. never caught a bighead or silver, being they filter feed....be like catching a spoonbill in the mouth happens ...but people win the lottery too I have friends that euro carp in and around St Louis, the common carp fishing has been hurt when the asian carp get out of hand, couple of lakes they fish went south just like Creve Coeur when they washed it
  9. walleyes dude walleyes
  10. use a testers model paint pin for a few dots, replace the hooks with wide gap KVD red hooks, and slather it with the slime from some keeper bows, get more slime keeping them in a bucket with some saltwater makes them slime up more, just saying (don't release them after... they will die after you collect the body slime)
  11. be nice to see stockton, LOZ and truman
  12. bass are everywhere, try using light tackle, 8# green line and ned rigs or drop shot, but this time of year, there are times the fish are just dormant, jigging spoons on fish marked just off bottom on humps will get you a few
  13. I read somewhere a student was injured by a jumping silver carp, I would how they do a study on the sizes/ages of the fish removed...it will be be for naught if they can't keep them out but when it floods they are just SOL...would be interesting to see how the bitter weather we have had effects them
  14. I am glad they are looking at genetics, the native river strain get far bigger than the lake strains typically stocked, world record fish come from that river strain..a worthy task for our fisheries folks, also people made fun of me when I pointed out bass were getting less food..and the possibility less baby Common Carp/Buffalo to eat may be an issue
  15. best bait! when chubs are spawning seems the males taste bad,.... but get a roed up slick and your golden
  16. this time of year is walleye watch time, from the end of Jan to April is your BEST time to catch a huge wall hanger, bull shoals and James river always started 1st, below truman the 1st two weeks of march 1st water we get after the end of Jan seems to push fish into staging areas, the trick here is to get them when they are making false runs, when they actually spawn they are not as easy to catch, many a year they are done before most folks even go after them, so now would be a great time to have a look or two for the big sows, they will hold in deep holes and make runs at night, in most places you can't keep walleyes during those times, the 1st deep water near by will hold fish...heavy jigs tipped with minnows are your best bet, as well as jigging spoons with a minnow head on the hook that rides up, hand tied marabou in 3/8 -1/2 oz some jigs that are 1/8 oz size can be customed with lead wire to fish heavy, wild caught minnows work best "slicks" or small chubs 3" or so fished slow within 2 foot of bottom, the big sows like to get behind big boulders in current, dark cloudy days with no wind will get them running up river, if we get some water in feb on a moon phase, call in to work! keep the males to eat if you must but turn back the big girls after a photo
  17. eehgad man......hope you get well, to much fun outdoors
