It was fun Scott. I knew you'd put one on after seeing me fish with it for a few minutes. Hope you get even with them stripers for me with one of them flies. Call me Thursday when your done in Blue Eye if you got time to fish

I have converted a Seadoo or jet ski trailor to a canoe transporter......I love it for ease of launching, loading and hauling. No more lifting into the bed or on top of truck and struggling again for me.

I think we still have a bunch to come up the river yet. 4 days ago, we were catching huge sows down around point 14 and the whole lake was exploding with them. Those fish should be getting up around Blunks in the next week or so.

Im not real familiar with that part of Alaska, but I do spend my summers in Western Alaska chasing grayling. There should be some great stonefly hatches and caddis hatches that time of year. There is also a lime green mayfly that comes off the water in the July time frame too. Most of your common trout flies will work for grayling, both dries and nymphs. Some of my favorite dries to use are stimulators and caddis flies in size 8 to 16's. Make sure you have a few in that lime green color. Bead heads and hare's ear nymphs are good ones for under the indicator or as a dropper. Check the rules in the areas your going to fish because a dropper is illegal in some places in Alaska. The grayling tend to hang out in the slower water of the creeks and streams and tend to be more in abundance in what I like to call the meadow streams. Slow winding water flowing through more of a flat land area. The rainbows will be in the faster water areas, more of what I would think of as mountain creeks or streams. The grayling are fun to catch and sight fishing for them is alot of fun. They can keep you busy on a bright sunny day when the hatches are coming off. I think the Alaska State Record was a 23 incher caught over in Ugashik Narrows. (One of Phil's favorite places) The largest I have landed was 22 inches over on Battle River in Western Alaska. Sounds like your gonna have a great time. I know all about building cabins in remote Alaska....LOL!

Cool Brian! Your boy is a Super Star!

Lots of parking and it is obvious when you see it. You can fish anywhere, some like it on the Powersite side rather thann the Forsythe side. Dont know if they are biting but you can usually catch something down there. Good luck and welcome to the forum!

Try the creek arms like Aunts Creek or Long Creek. Look for the standing timber and brush piles in 15 to 30 feet of water. The bite was slow for me yesterday, but we did pick a few up in the coves straight across from the Aunts Creek boat launch.

Yeah, we picked up some pigs yesterday

I have been re-learning all this lake fishing stuff over the last couple of weeks. I've been toting the flyrod out every time and love getting the small windows of opportunity on surface busting fish. Every time I've been on the Rock the last 2 weeks, while looking for crappie, I;ve been able to catch a few bass on the fly rod. Love it!

Nice small mouth! Boy did it rain yesterday.

Was gonna fish the James early this morning and after reading all the USGS guages, I headed out the door at 6:20 a.m. I did not even get to the end of the road when a buddy called and asked if I wanted to go fishing. I turned the truck around, met up with Ryan, and we were fishing by 8 a.m. Again, we put in across from Cape Fair Marina and headed to a spot for crappie. As we were pulling up to the spot, we notice some activity on the surface 15 feet or so from the bank. I started chucking the fly rod at the feeding fish and Ryan was throwing a rooster tail. We both caught several short bass and a couple that were in the 2 pound range. After getting bored with the bass, we proceeded into the cove to get on some crappie. First pole timber we pulled up to gave up 2 keeper slabs. We fished every other bit of structure in that small cove and did not catch another. As we were motoring out of the cove we noticed boils everywhere on the main lake around the point 14 area. These boils were from one side of the lake to the other. I again picked up the fly rod and first cast was another short bass. Next cast was a blue gill....now this was in 72 feet of water and I was stripping a minnow fly just as fast as I could strip it. Ryan picked up two nice bass and then we started getting white bass. Big sows in the 2 to 3 pound range and they were exploding all around us. Ryan was throwing a top water red fin and I was getting out fished 3 to 1 on the fly rod. This activity lasted about 30 minutes and we both caught large mouth, spots, whites and blue gill, then they were gone. We continued our hunt for crappie and managed a few more before deciding we were wet enough to quit. The Whites being out in the lake around point 14 gives hope that the run will still happen after the flood waters on the James go down.

Well, it appears we just missed the bite Phil. Getting reports from yesterday afternoon and last night that some fellas did real well at the shoals as the water was rising.

My brother-in-law caught a 21 incher in Cow Creek area 3 years ago in late winter.

Yep, I think we were the blind hogs not finding nuts today. I have been catching them over the last week in all the areas we fished today. I thought for sure Taylor would be loaded with them this morning after last night's rain. The river is rising some but only about 3 inches so far. Weather Channel is predicting flood stage by early afternoon tomorrow in the Galena area. current depth there is somewhere around 3 1/2 feet and flood stage being somewhere around 15 feet. Might have to go down there and fish the rising water all night tonight.

Went out chasing some rock chickens with a buddy today and found a few. Put in around 9 a.m. across from Cape Fair Marina and started looking for brush piles and lay downs in 6 to 15 feet of water. We mostly threw jigs but I did bring the long rod along. First pile produced 6 or 7 nice ones and a few shorts. We only fished each spot for about 10 minutes before moving on to the next. Just before the down pour we noticed some fish hitting the surface and I picked up the fly rod and threw one of my minnow patterns in the area. Ended up landing a 3 1/2 pound bass and another about 2 pounds. Stopped fishing around 4 with 26 keepers in the live wells. Most fish were caught in 8-15 feet of water right up against pole timber or in the brush piles.

Flood gates might be open by this weekend. We're fixin to get a whole bunch of rain according to the weatherman and that might make for some tough trout fishing this weekend. You might be able to fish in the pavillion parking lot on the north side below the hatchery.
