  1. I have never been one to brag on the upper lake for fear that it would draw in the crowd. Since "04", that is just wishful thinking. Right now, there is more quality rainbows, in the upper lake, than I have seen in years, maybe ever. If you are a wade fisherman, then you need to add taney to your wish list for this fall. Right now the fishing is tough, but the fish are there. I won't guarantee that you will catch more than you have ever caught, but you will catch quality fish. And by that I mean fish in the two to four pound range. I started fishing at nine on friday night with the water off and on its way down. In the next six hours I caught 23 fish with only one dink in the bunch. I had two fish pushing the four pound mark and several between two and three. I fished sowbugs all night. Several of the "long fly" fishermen that I talked to, were having similar success. Saturday morning I fished from 8 to 12 and every where I went, from the # 1 to the big hole had quality fish and lots of them. With the wader hatch coming on early in the morning, it makes for alot tougher fishing during the day. I caught two more fish that morning around 3.5 pounds each, and a few more 2 to 3. Overall, maybe 35 to 40 fish, and the only dink was from the night before. The water levels are getting more predictable, so check the charts before you go. With the water off, you stand a good chance of catching some of the quality rainbows that I was fortunate enough to catch. Good luck and give a report.
  2. That's good news Murdoc. I know you have been waiting on these new blanks for some time now. Any of you forum members out there that do not know of Murdoc and his rod building abilities, need to give him a shout. He is as fine of a craftsman that you will find, and he builds every rod like it was going to be his own personal fishing tool. Check out his website and judge for yourself. Rick Osborn Laker67
  3. According to what I have read, DO levels are affected by warmer water temps, untreated and partially treated sewage, and from the fertilizer commonly used for lawns and gardens and espesically golf courses. Warm water dissplaces DO, and the sewage and the fertilizers spawn bacteria that consume the dissolved oxygen. The "Watershed" organization out of springfield talks about the causes and the effects of DO on different species of fish. From what I gathered, run off materials have a big impact on DO levels, especially in this warmer weather. But like Phil says, the fish at taney have been surviving with it for years. And from what I see, it certainly has not stunted their growth. Although, more and more lakeside development could have serious impact in the near future.I have never been in favor of minimum flow, but it may become a neccesity in the future to maintain a healthy population of trout at taney.
  4. Around "05", we had a confirmed report of cougar tracks in southwest camden county. My friend Rob, owns property on spencer creek near ha ha tonka state park. On his property is a fairly large spring that feeds spencer creek. He maintains the spring and small pool of water for the wildlife. Over the years he has come to reconize the tracks of different animals that use the spring. One morning he finds huge tracks like he has never seen before. He took pictures and delivered them to the mdc office here in camdenton. The next day, someone from mdc visited the spring and confirmed the tracks as being that of a large male cougar. A few days later, someone reported seeing a cougar near tunnel dam, but it was never confirmed that I am aware.
  5. That was good. I heard one that I thought was funny so I will add it to this thread. In a missing persons add: MISSING one husband and his fly fishing gear. REWARD for fly fishing gear.
  6. A true hero in my book. thanks for posting the story Dano.
  7. Next it will be bear, mountain lion and buffalo. Why don't they give some trout?
  8. As I have said before," I am certainly no rod or reel expert, but I do have 27 years experience with sage rods. I have fished the RP to XP series with no complaints or any problems. If you fish nymph's or sight fish, you owe it to yourself to try one out on the creek. I was told that the Z=axis is a continuation of the original RP thru XP series. My original RP rod is 27 years old and fishes just as well today as it did new. I also fish a five and seven weight in the XP series, and they, as well, have performed flawlessly. I cast my vote for sage.
  9. Congrats to Donna and a nice fish for you as well. The background shot in Donna's pic contains one of those rare and occassional sightings. LOW WATER
  10. Great to meet you and your son, Gary. I started fishing after they raised the water. I always keep a fish count at night, I stopped counting at zero. Get that boy back on the water soon.
  11. And I remember the night you caught it. Keep braggin Ryno, it's a fish worth braggin about.
  12. Do not overlook the outside bends in the river. Most have undercut banks. I don't know a thing about smb's, but I do know that rainbows and browns key on those areas.
  13. Yeah. What he said.
  14. Was down for a couple of hours on saturday morning. Water was up about a foot but clear. More rain for this week predicted. I caught fish on tan and grey sowbugs. I'm sure that all of the usual BF's, JD's, and coo coo kachoo's will work. Good luck to you.
  15. Sorry. I misinterpreted your original post. I thought you were saying that soft plastic was allowed in zone 2 and 1. My mistake on both counts. In a topic a few months back, creating a c and r area was part of the discussion. I would like to see zone 1 turned into bait water, and zone 3 as the flies only area. The bait water could start below Clarence Holland Dam, and catch and return above the dam.
  16. Some of you need to be careful when you dismount your horse. The fall might kill you.
  17. I think you have the wrong trout park. These regs do not apply at zone 2, or zone 1, bssp.
  18. Well I was hoping to get down and fish with you and MC before your departure. Graduation ceremonies this weekend, so that's not going to happen. I saw your post about taking a dunk last night. Did they add a new rock to upper taney? Be safe and have a good summer. Hopefully, this fall, we won't be seeing any flood gates.
  19. I got some good news for you, fishinwrench. I checked out the stream cam about an hour ago and I counld'nt see a thing. That means you can fish today with no worries. People will continue to fish bssp no matter what. It's disappointing to have these down years, but you make do. I complain the loudest, but continue to make the best of what we are offered.
  20. Very well stated Bob. You and I are making some of the same references. The difference is that you explained it a heck of alot better than I. Bssp is definately on a down hill slide. No-Luck challenged my original statement. I think he mis understood what I was trying to say. Areas that should have 100 visible fish now have 10 visible fish or less, and it's not because they are on the bottom. It's because they are just not there. I made a reference to the "04" season being similar to this year. Your reference to management is addressing the same issue and time frame. Bssp is like an old friend slipping away.
  21. I have had many a bear encounter at night while fishing taney. They have roamed the bank behind me unaware of my presence in the creek. They are masters at hiding because every time I would shine the light, they would already be hidden. Once I thought I had encountered big foot, but it turned out to be Leonard.
  22. Them taney boys must be lower than a snake belly in a wagon rut.
  23. I was there this past sunday. It was almost a ghost town for a weekend. The creek is really lacking in numbers of fish. I walked between the upper and middle wingdams, and only counted six small fish. Zone 2 two has fair numbers, but nothing like it should be. I was also there two weeks ago and noticed a reduced number of fish. This season is starting to look like the 04 season.
  24. A great looking fish. That should draw some attention to beaver tailrace. Thanks for posting Zach. My congrats to Junior.
  25. Welcome to taney. Do exactly what you do at montauk, and you'll catch fish. Good luck.
