  1. Back then, POTUS did not get up in a news conference and make idle threats to look cool. Nor did he give out specifics of a military exercise to the enemy on national TV either.
  2. I don't mind fishy, but like fins, I don't like something that smells like a sewer pond when I prepare it. These MDC lakes get pretty stale this time of year, not much fresh water in a while. Perry County Lake actually has an aeration system to improve the O2 levels. But water was green and murky. I will try some vinegar or buttermilk. I like the McCormicks Cajun breading along with some jalapeno hushpuppies.
  3. It is the Nimitz battle group being redeployed to Syria in operation Obama Temper Tantrum. Clicked on it last night and made it my avatar. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/09/02/us-syria-crisis-ships-idUSBRE9810DA20130902?feedType=RSS&feedName=domesticNews
  4. They are channel cats. Flesh is yellow and oily. Maybe the vinegar will cut the oil.
  5. Been kinda lazy this summer. Taking short trips to local lakes in the new to me bass boat when I am home. Last couple of trips to Perry County Lake has produced an abundance of catfish. Easy fishing, sitting back in a shaded cove, sipping brews and listening to tunes. Nice and relaxing. Normally I just toss them into the pond, but a few died on the way home and I decided to clean them out. I have skinned and filleted them out. Now I need a good way to cook them up. I have fried and grilled them in the past, but they still taste like the muddy stagnant lakes they come out of. Last weekend, while fishing Pickwick Lake, we had dinner at Top of the River Catfish place. I had the fried crawdad tails and shrimp scampi, but I sampled their catfish also. It was excellent, white and firm, no fishy taste. I really think it was sauger or walleye, but they said catfish. So, what are the recipes and marinades that work the best? What do I soak the filets in to get the muddy taste out?
  6. Get a piece of stainless screen and make a divider.
  7. I am going to raised beds next year. I have too much trouble control moisture and soil content with my current setup. I started a few a couple of years ago and they have done well. May save the main garden for flowers and corn. I have tossed some lettuce, radishes, mustard, and turnips in the last few weeks. I watered and all come up. Cool spell coming on Monday, fall is not far off.
  8. Jeesh, I would rather sit at home and bang my fingers in a screen door than go near a major river this weekend and expect to "fish".
  9. I think he meant 35lb thrust, not horsepower.
  10. I think there is a governing body that oversees dams of any type, especially ones that threaten the lives of others. A few years back there was some flack from someone regarding improperly built personal lakes that flood others property. I think Ameren UE and Taum Sauk comes to mind. Personal dams still are responsible if they break and flood other property.
  11. I had to water the remnants of the garden today. Finally reached a dry spell here.
  12. Gavin is talking about Port Perry, not Perry County lake.
  13. I saw a couple early in July, none since. Maybe hornworms are becoming extinct.
  14. I doubt you would want to, if I remember right, it increases blood flow. That would spread poison around quicker in the case of a snake bite. Consult your physician. Just curious about the bees, did the reaction cause your breathing to stop?
  15. I have 3, all made by Stearns. I have one that is about 15 years old and it came inside of a Browning Fly Vest that I used to wear wading on trips where I was out alone. I have another waist pack type on a belt, you pull the cord, it inflates, and you either ride or put it over your head. The last is the Sospender type I use from time to time when boating and duck hunting. I really can't tell if they work, never pulled the cord and had to use them. But all are better than a big bulky pfd.
  16. You may be right, I thought it was one of the "cheese worms" that have been around for a long time.
  17. I talked to a couple of guys at work today, I guess the tomatoes got the "blight" and died off. Never had it, but it sure does a number.
  18. It keeps them from flopping around......
  19. Not everyone lets the feral animals get away
  20. I saw this on Craigslist tonite while searching for something else. Why bother to tye it on? Just stick a hook thru the middle like all of the guides did back in the 80's when it first came out. http://semo.craigslist.org/spo/4003066599.html It is not a "legal" fly on any water that bans soft plastics.
  21. We had the monsoon set in a few weeks back that resulted in 3 weeks of rainy, cloudy weather. We never did get too much rain, but we lost alot of good hot sunshine during that time. My tomatoes were doing great, then all of a sudden, the vines just died, leaving a load of green tomatoes. Grape tomato vines died out about 3/4 of the way. Grape tomatoes were swelling and busting before ripening. Cherry tomato that grew out of the compost bin again this year is healthy and producing. Okra looks great, but not blooming and putting on. Cucumbers died just like the tomatoes. Squash are still hanging on but not setting any fruits. Bell Pepper are doing great. I plowed under the dead cucs, pumpkins that never set a pumpkin, and green beans today. Sowed some mustard and turnips in the place to add some cover crop on the garden. Planted lettuce and radishes in the raised beds. I really don't know what is going on with the garden, it has me stumped. It really seems like something is missing.
  22. I watched a large watersnake wrestle with a catfish for about an hour last summer on a stream. I first noticed a commotion on the other bank and saw the fish flopping. The snake had caught a catfish larger than it could handle and was trying to swallow it. It was a steep bank on the other side and the snake could not control the fish. It would drag it out of the water and try to swallow. The fish would flop and they would tumble back down to the water. The catfish managed to break loose a few times, but the snake would catch it before it got into deep enough water to swim. Don't know if he ever got the job done, I finally decided to get back to fishing and left the 2 alone to play the game.
  23. Every time I kill one at the farm, I consider it a "treat" to my family.
  24. The moisture has mushrooms popping up all around here too. But nothing edible that I can tell. Some big toad stools in fairy rings in alot of places.
